Big leak in back of the engine

Hello

81, 240d, 195k miles

I have a good size leak coming froming the back of my engine. Looks like it is dripping off where tranny meets engine. At first I got real nervous thinking it is the rear main but I read that is usually unlikely in these older mercedes with there rope seal.
Upon cleaning the engine, I think it is coming from where the oil filter housing and the engine meet? Is that a real good possibility?
The oil is only dripping on that side too.

How much would you think it be to have an independet shop replace that gasket?

I hate having oil spots everywhere I park.

thanks again

Jake

If it is between the engine and the bellhousing...
then it pretty much has to be the balls which seal the passage to the oil squirters...
I do not know why they chose to seal those with pressed in bearings..
but that is what is shown in the FSM... you take them out in order to run a cleaning rod into the oil squirter " log " .

no oil squirters on a 240d. Its. the oil filter housing to block gasket.

Could be the valve cover gasket, or even the head gasket leaking at the back of the motor and running down....

I did not look at the engine spec... I was going by the ' where the engine meets the tranny ...and ' in back of engine' .... took it too literally it looks like.... I do not know if the 240 has oil passage cleanout holes back there or not...

Clean everything up with your choice cleaner then take a drive. After that you will know where the leak is.

Had a similar problem on my 300CD. I torqued down the oil housing mounting bolts and no more leak.
