Check you ground cable from the engine to body. not sure on a 126 but on a 123 it is on the drivers side, under the car between body and eng/trans adaptor plate.

make sure it is clean and tight.

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power

It sounds to me like a classic low-voltage situation. As Charlie said, check your ground connections and I would also clean the connections on the starter and battery.

There should be a plastic cap on the relay unit; looks like this:
