seat back question
I got a gorgeous PS seat from the PnP last weekend out of an '85 300D. I plan to replace the box spring on the DS of the '82 wagon with it. I have done that before, so I think I can handle it.
What I want to know is what would be involved in replacing the upper part of the DS seat. I'll have to take it off to change out the boxspring anyway and it has a bad tear in the place where these seats usually tear - near the door on the lumbar support area. I suppose I would have to cut a hole in the vinyl to accommodate the armrest, and move the mounting hardware over. Is it that easy? The adjustment knob is on the other side, too - but I am not sure how that all works out.

I just went through this and installed the seat today. I have dragged home several seats from 240`s and 280-E that had the same type of MB tex. so this has been a learning experience taking seats apart, pulling MB Tex and discovering the Horsehair pad is like burnt toast.
You will have to swap in the seat track from your drivers side, because of the handles for the elevation and forward and back. You won`t want the pass side back rest on the driver side, because the black knob for the back rest tilt will be next to the consoul. anyway you can remove the MB Tex off your new seat and swap it to your drivers seat? I will swap over. then with the back panel off you will be able to see where to cut the hole for the arm rest. I think your year has 2 screws under the lower edge of the back panel to remove it. It just slides down. with the panel off, look to see if there is a horizonal plastic piece against the Horse hair pad. it has some hooks that hold 5 or 6 cloth loops to keep the tex pulled tight. use sime needle nose pliers to slip the loops off the hooks. then there are 2 on each side, 14mm bolts that hold the seatback to the seat bottom. the seat tracks are a little tricky to get the screws and everything lined up. good time to wash up the spring box frame. amazing how much stuff I find that it collects. food, drinks, candy, gum stuff i don`t know what it is. maybe some lab experiment gone bad. some of the later spring boxes have coil springs in each forward corner. my 240 didn` have these, so is an up grade. I used a pool noodle and screwed it down into the coil to give it some more support, then cut it off a little high thinking maybe it will help the corner of the seat from sagging and help the coil. charlie

When I removed the seat tracks. I dissasembled the whole thing. removed the elevation part then the forward and back section.
I can`t really see any other way to get to the 3 screws on each side that hold it to the spring box. you will have to slide the tracks back and forth to line up the screws with the holes. take pictures as you go along removing things. even then I had to remove things because I got ahead of my self, or suddenly you realize, OH NO where does that part go? Have fun with your project. Charlie

Swapping Seat Backs
Charlie,
My son and I just did the passenger to driver seat swap. Went well. Got in the seat, after installation, and discovered the frame keeping the back straight was bent/broken. Now I get to remove the seat again and swap seat backs. The two - 14mm bolts you talk about above, is that all that needs to be removed to take the seat back off? Or is there a hidden pin in there? The seat back on the original seat is in great shape, and would be a good exchange. Thanks for the help. Hammerwerfer

You will have to pry off the plastic trim pieces off each side to expose the 14mm bolts that hold the seat back to the lower seat spring box.
those plastic pieces will break, probably from the age of them, just have to very carefull. the black adjustment knob for the seat back adjustment, just pulls off. maybe pry it around the edges with a flat screwdriver. the plastic trim pieces have a small roung center that snapps into a hole, maybe an 1 1/4 in. I used a small prybar on the back side trying to get the little plastic tangs to slip back into the hole. then suddenly it popped off, or cracked. you can get some from the junk yard, even if a different color, they can be painted with a plastic paint. Once the 14mm bolts are removed, the seat back should lift off. Charlie

Charlie, Thanks for the guidance. Saw most of what you described. Will take a look at the balck knob on the old seat. See what needs to be done.
