617 out of a gelandewagen
Hi all! Love this great forum!
heres my question. There is a guy selling a 617 out of a 5spd glenda. I want to put it in my 1984 240d . I am wondering if my 4spd trans will work using the flywheel from the 5spd, anyone done that before? This place reminds me of somewhere I used to hang out . you are getting the engine from the G WITH the flywheel? I think there are some issues with the G flywheel... winmutt would be familiar with them as he has one...
that aside, to put the 5cyl into the 240 will require shorter drive shaft, and a different trans plate.

I have put a 4spd in a 300d acouple years ago
he said the trans was "froze up" and he "cut it up and scrapped it" he then performed a chevy 350 swap. |

ah, so you know just what I mean.
did you have parts made, or did you have stuff to swap in? also, I think you will need to get some 617 mount arms, as I don't know if the g arms will work...

I had the driveline shortened the 4" and I shortened the shift linkage myself on the 300d project.
I was wondering if the mount arms were diferent. |

donr know about the Gwagon flywheel, but if its simply a 617 flywheel its preferrable to the 240 flywheel. also the 4 speed swap is fairly easy, while it is the incorrect part, the 240D auto crossmember works in a 300 4spd combination. you will also need to shorten your shifter rods by approximately 4 inches. Pretty simple, you cut them off and rethread them with a die. you will also need to shorten your drive shaft approx 4 inches.

I was hoping to use the engine and flywheel together from the G as to avoid the balance issues I have heard about withe the 240d flywheel/617 combo.

Yes ---the g wagon and the w123 flys are the same part, just some earlier ones are off balance matched--You got the engine-fly still bolted together--No problemo.
Also the 37 lb fly we are talking about is also used in the 207,209-307 308 trucks with the 616--it gives more momentum starting in each gear. You still got to do your due dilligance to ensure you dont get vibrations with the drive shaft--do your vibration problem searches. |
