What does rough shape mean?

Rust, bad paint, bad interior, bad tranny...?

How many miles? Clean title? Where has the car spent its life? Automatic or manual? Accidents?

Really rough cars are getting harder to find a buyer for. I know of many just sitting. Just costs too much time, effort and money to restore them to reasonable condition usually. Or the end result is just not worth it.

Buying good examples is becoming more of a necessity as time moves forward. Unfortunatly time to also work extensivly on them is no longer available for many.

Times are and have been changing. The generations that worked on their own cars is also fading in my opinion. Far fewer today than ever. It is pretty evident that cars have entered the area of just being disposable items.

Right now except for members on this site I see few guys picking up wrenches. Cars of little nominal value are not getting restored now as a general rule in my opinion. So a really run out older car can be just that. Ebay and craiglist sometimes gives them their last owners.

Another member of this forum could not get $1200 for his 200D, which had rust in the rockers, around the tail lights, and a questionable engine. The rest of the car was mechanically sound.

A parts car generally sells for $500 to $700. There are a couple of parts finnies on ebay at higher starting bids and they are just sitting there.

I had a 66 200d and I let it go for $1700. It was a good driver and that was maybe 4-5 years ago. Take a look at my gallery photo of it.
