I have just discovered the feature on my '84 300D that allows you to operate the power windows with the driver's door open, even without the key. However, the sunroof is not included in this. How hard would it be to make it so the sunroof also works with the door open?

Pretty sure that this is not how it originally functioned.

As far as i know, nothing in the power window circuit was originally wired through the door contact switches.

Hmmm I thought only the seat adjust switches on cars with electric seats worked with the door open... what car do you have? 84D... wow.

I don't remember this feature either, and I sold them new.

The windows on my 1982 300SD do not operate unless the key is on.

The windows in my 1986 300SDL DO operate, along with the seats, when the door is open, even if the key is nowhere in sight of the car. I assumed it was a feature as well. If it isn't, it's certainly a COMMON failure point. And a desirable one as far as I'm concerned; nothing's caught fire yet and it's done it since I bought the car five or six years ago.

The windows in my 1982 240D are manually cranked.

Only the Euro W123s have this feature. In the Euro cars there is an extra door contact switch in the door jamb and it only works with the driver's door. In the Federal cars, there is just a black plastic filler piece in this spot. I really love this feature on my car.

Fascinating. On a related note, my 240d's windows used to work with key turned to ACC, then when I put the om617 in with accompanying alternator, the behavior went back to only when the key was in the on position.

How's that work?

There's a simple mod I made to my 300D that costs nothing and takes 2 minutes to allow opening all windows without the key.

This car is a Euro spec one, since that seems to matter. And my driver's door has two switches, not just one. I can hear a relay click when I push the door switch that enables the window in, even if the car is on. Is the power supply wire for the sunroof routed in such a way to make it easy to connect it to this relay?
