Ok I did some temp testing. I ran both the stock 1156 and high output 3497 for about 7:30 in open air, then turned off the power. My temp gun said the stock lamp 305*F. The high output bulb was 387*F. I didn't have a way to measure the temp inside the lamps inside the fixture.

3497 in a w123 wagon
Has anyone tried installing the 3497s in a w123 wagon? The rear lights are fairly small, so the brighter the bulb, the better, IMO. Are the sockets on the w123 sedan and wagon, and w126, all identical?

Is the stop lamp also a parking lamp? IE a dual filament lamp. If so you want to find a 3496 lamp. Same technology in a dual filament lamp.

What about replacing the reverse light with the 796 mini halogen? I hear them being used on VW's and BMW's and are 100% brighter! With the dark areas I drive and long driveway, that would be great!
Since they would be on for maybe a minute tops (likely 30 seconds), heat should not be an issue, right?

Check your brake light bulbs
I just purchased two of the 3497's and installed them last night in my 1985 300SD with 115k miles. I had original German bulbs in the brake light position and both were black on the outside of the bulb from age and heat. Amazing they were still working 26 years later but brightness of course would have been less than when new. Suggest all people that haven't checked lately look at these bulbs.

i love the mini halogen. i use them in all my cars for the reversing lights. not sure if there the same number but mine are 55w a piece. and yes im sure there is a possibility of heat damage in the absence of common sense.

I understand that the mini halogen 796 is a lower wattage, as not to draw too much power. I believe the 796's are 35W. I've been reading around and heard of issues witht he 50 or 55w versions. I think it is more with newer cars and the switches. Glad yours are working well!!
I got to try the brighter ones and on the Excursion too. With tinted windows on both it would really help

I could not find these type of bulbs, but I found 1156 bulbs that are 26.9W (12.8V). Bought three pairs for ~$6
Put them on the car and noticed slightly brighter light (the old ones were 21W but not that old, just starting to blacken on one side of the bulb glass).

Iam glad this thread came back up. I was wondering where I got the info on the 3497 bulbs and what year ricers the bulbs came in. It`s in post #16.
I was going through the rows of Prelude and Accord wagons 92 - 96 & 94 - 97 and Accord front 90 - 93. I checked every Jap car I came across, interesting how some of the covers come off the different cars. the Germans make it so simple. The only cars I found any (5 total bulbs) was in the 91 Accra Legend. I mainly found the 1156 bulbs. maybe they were replaced with these. I must have looked through 20 or so cars to find the 5. The info stamped on the bulb is: 3497 stanley u. 12v45cp(27w) I found these in one yard, I forgot to look in the other 3 yards I was in. {Note to self "Replace the bulbs today"} Charlie
