This is where the use of dye is best. The dye will run down the drain, easy to spot.

From a diy standpoint, a good sniffer is out of reach financially speaking. Heck, I chase down sealed system leaks at least once a week and I still can't justify a grand on a good sniffer. Those fifty dollar sniffers go off if you blow on them.

There is no affect to a mobile Ac system when there is one ounce of dye in the system.

Would dye from a very small and slow leak in the evaporator show up at the drain? Where exactly will you look? Pull the drain tube from the evap housing (above the tunnel)?

Even a small leak will show up. You have to use a black light (ultra violet). If it leaks freon, it will leak dye, which will stain the drain tube, or the trans. Easy to spot under the car.

Best situation is to have an A/C technician as a friend. He will be doing the system commissioning with all his fancy equipment at no cost to me.

Just came across this Quick Tip #11: H2 Tracer Gas and Pressure Testing - Yellow Jacket Videos

95% Nitrogen & 5% hydrogen tracer + hydrogen sniffer = legal pressure test for those worried about legality.

What is a ' hydrogen tracer' ?
What kind of container does it come in ?
What is a ' hydrogen sniffer ' ?
If you have a sniffer which will detect R22, R12, R134a will this require buying a different sniffer ?

You KNEW this questions would be apparent when you posted... why wait for them to be asked ?

No, I did not.. will go look at it....

Edit , well, no wonder you did not want to include those obvious Questions and
Answers in your post.

Requires a different Sniffer than the one for R12, R134a ..... and a BIT COSTLY at that...

I just called my local welding supply shop.....
he keeps a couple of Nitrogen/5% hydrogen available for an HVAC person who uses it for leak checking on Home AC equipment.
The gas alone for the 300 cubic foot cylinder ( the size cylinder the do not sell outright ... a common situation which applies to certain big acetylene and oxy cylinders also ) cost $138. JUST THE GAS inside the cylinder... there would be a $6.50 charge per month for the rental of that cylinder also... and a $125 deposit on the cylinder.
They DO sell the 200 cubic foot cylinder for $274... so you would own it and not be paying the $6.50 per month rental . The gas for that cylinder would cost $118 . So $392 out the door. So if you did little AC leak testing and it took you years to use up that cylinder you would not be accruing the rental charge.

So for about $650 dollars you too can use nitrogen and hydrogen for sniffing out leaks in your system.
