Leaking injector line

Now that there is going to be a Texas diesel meet, I need to get the SD up and ready for the trip.

The #2 injector line is leaking where it attaches to the pump. The mechanic says there are little gaskets that can wear and leak. This doesn't look TOO difficult to do.
The questions?

What tools are necessary to do this? Looks like a 17mm.
Is it necessary to replace all the seals, or just the one for that injector line?
Could this be leaking enough pressure to cause the "rack bolt rock" that wasn't fixed by replacing the rack bolt?

I hope to get this fixed soon. When I park there is a pungent smell of diesel around the front of the car. Not to mention that ROCK...

Pipe fitting probable cause

Greetings,

If you are experiencing a leak on the pump side of the injector line, then I'd say the pipe fitting will need to be changed as well as the copper sealing ring that sits beneath the delivery valve. This is about the only way to stop your leak. A temp fix is to use teflon tape on the pipe fitting threads, but this is a temp fix.
Your diesel fuel smell from the engine compartment leads me to think that perhaps a rubber line is not tight, or perhaps the main fuel filter not tight, or your injector bleed off lines are seeping fuel. I'd take a look at a clean engine to determine where the leak is. If you still have the old style primer pump, they are famous for leakage if they aren't tightened all the way down. Of course you can change it out to the new spring loaded design for only $12 bucks here at Fastlane.

ouch teflon tape on an injector line doesn't seem like a good idea what happens if it goes down the line?

It goes on the threads

Greetings,

Apparently you are unfamilar with the proper use of this teflon tape. You use it at least two threads down from the top and wrap tightly. If there is pressure going out of this fitting, there's no chance of tape being sucked in. Think about it.

Ok, that gives me some idea. The fuel seems to be leaking down the side of the pump, but could be coming from the hand pump also. I've changed one before...won't do it again. Perhaps if I bought the crow's foot piece to do it.
So by the pipe fitting, do I need the entire line? I will have to open the hood and examine to tell exactly what you're describing. The fitting on the #2 is definitely leaking (all wet around it) and something has leaked enough fuel to be all around the motor mount. I had used the hand pump when the fuel ran low and it threw a BUNCH of trash in the fuel filters. The car completely quit on an exit. It would start but not idle. I put some trans fluid with some fuel and pumped it back up. Started with a big puff of smoke. I've run Techron cleaner as well as Redline since then, and changed the fuel filters. The clear one doesn't show much in it yet, and I've run the fuel to 1/4 tank several times. The hand pump doesn't squirt out diesel when used, so I assume it's ok. I will check the fuel lines too and make sure they're tight on the filters.
Thanks for any ideas...

Pipe fitting leaking, order the part

Greetings,

If your pipe fitting is obviously leaking than order the two parts I suggested. If your primer pump leaks fuel when priming it, then order it as well. Check and tighten all fuel related hose clamps and filter bolts. If your engine mount rubber is soaked with fuel, then I'd say that your rubber lines are not tight at the fuel tank to primer pump connection or the primary filter hose is loose.

That was enlightening trip. I found that one of the fuel lines wasn't completely tight and had some seepage. Also, I checked the line to see if it was tight going into the pump. The 17mm (top) part wasn't torqued nearly as tight as the others. I don't have a torque wrench, but it moved pretty easily. I tightened it, and I'm going in a bit to the car wash to clean the engine.

Hopefully that did some good. Now to stop the rocking. I think something may have happened to the #1 injector when the glow plug broke off. It hasn't been nearly as smooth since, and seems to be making a "knocking" noise in that area.

Thanks for the help!!!

Is the glow plug in the precombustion chamber?

Greetings,

Are you saying that part of your glow plug is now sitting inside your precombustion chamber? It could be restricting the flow of injected fuel to the cylinder if that's the case. I don't see why the precombustion chamber can't be pulled and give a look see to determine if that is the case. Removing the broken part of the glow plug dropped into this chamber would be a plus in it's operational ability.
