Question Waht the... what's making this sound...?

So recently I started to hear this weird sound when the engine is cold and under load, like a "fftfftfftfftfft", like there's something out of tune. I've heard that sound before on other cars and you think "that car really needs new spark plugs..." I'm pretty sure mine doesn't need spark plugs, but I dont' really know what to make out of that sound, so I'm asking the non-spark plug gurus here what your opinion would be. Thanks!

har har de har. yeah, I'm hearing it in Salt Lake City...
It does sound kind of like a clogged muffler and the sound comes from the driver's side. When I'm driving with my windows open and I have walls at both sides of the road the sound does come from the driver's side, which is where the exhaust pipe is at, so that would make sense. I'm going to have to check the muffler for anything obstructing it and see if that's cousing the sound. But my problem with it is that the "tff tff tff tff" sounds synchronized with the engine, like when a spark plug is misfiring in a gas car. My Caddy was making this same noise, so I changed the rotor, spark plugs and wires and the engine runs smooth now and the sound is gone, but in the Diesel Benz that's another story...

could be a loose glow plug or injector, could be a bad exhaust gasket on one cylinder...
open the hood, and lock the car in position, with chocks, chains, straps etc. put the car in gear and see if you can repeat the noise under the hood.

My cruise control actuator was making a noise something like that on my 85 TD. It was more of a 'clicking' sound but once I messed with the stalk a bit it went away. I discovered it was the source of the sound by putting my hand on the actuator and I felt the noise inside it.

My 300TD started making this sound recently, in the morning until warmed up. I believe it to be a bad injector, but haven't had time to investigate (or obtain the knowledge to investigate ).

I wonder if you've got a hole in a vacuum line.

Thanks for the input guys! My engine was nailing horribly on december-jan when cold, and my mileage decreased from 32 MPG to 19, so it could be a bad injector... I recently did a diesel purge and that took care of the nailing, and also purchased a set of Monark nozzles to see if that will fix the mileage issue, I'll check on those glow plugs and injectors ASAP. Thanks again!

I doubt it since the sound is synchronized with the engine's RPMs... A vacuum hose would probably do a steady whistle or whine I'd think...
