87 300TD 15 ATDC confirmed... still smoking

I have an 87 300TD... had injectors balanced at the recommended pressure... I don't remember exactly what the pressure is but its the norm I'm sure.
I have black smoke issues during acceleration and puffing smoke at idle even when warm. I checked the timing earlier and it's 15 atdc. (aligned crank marks at 15 atdc and peeked through the IP hole)

what could be causing the black smoke... it IS unburned fuel correct? I tinkered with the "flapper" valve directly below the air filter.. since its been disconnected for ages I figured I'd just jam the flapper door open for good measure. Will see if the smoke improves.

Opinions are welcome...

15 degrees after top dead center? Is that the factory spec? I'm pretty sure on mine the factory spec is something like 22 degrees BEFORE top dead center.

When I had the same problem the injection pump was bad.

For a turbo 603? Can anyone confirm the actual factory spec? Thanks.

Your ear will tell you if timing is near the mark. Loud rapping and clacking??? Too advanced. Mute or muffled or very little sound??? Too retarded. And if you are on the wrong side of TDC by that number of degrees she won't run.

Smoke? Timing chain slack... a new one cleaned up the smoke at idle for me and added power.

Black smoke on acceleration? Maybe the ALDA is too slacked off / or removed from the car. What if you drive with a lighter foot on the same stretch... same amount of black?

Original spec. is 15* ATDC, new spec IIRC is 14* ATDC, I went 13.5* which is the limit with tolerance. It doesn't sound like a timing issue.

Possibly an IP problem, although I'll get flamed for this I suggest pouring some RedLine Diesel Fuel Catalyst into your tank, possibly fill the filter with ATF for a quick detergent-based purge to see if it helps.

Unburned fuel typically is white to blue-white (cylinder not firing), black is typically overfueling / partially burned fuel.

I've actualy got the same issue and any input would help too. However, I have a new Monarch injection pump and monach nozzle from Sean watts. I am having light black smoke puffing at idle as well. I think it's pretty normal on take off, and gone at full throttle.

I have not done the "A-B timing light" adjustment yet. Would that help us?

My Alda is untouched at this point but may need to tamper with it for off-the-line acceleration

If it's missing I'd say that the injector isn't closing, otherwise ?? A bad injector could drip and cause black puffs, if it isn't closing completely it could also be peeing and cause black smoke. Since you've bought new injectors and Watts' reputation is good (I believe he pop-tests every injector before he ships them) it is hard to believe that is the problem.

Advanced timing will nail, retarded will be gutless and smokey during acceleration (with high EGTs if you can measure). I can't even say that the timing device / advance would be the problem really.

Does the puffing correspond at all to any miss? Can you feel a miss with your hand on the cam-cover? Does loosening any one injector line clear up the black puffs? I'm kind of grasping for straws on this.

In my case, there's no missing. The engine sounds good and very smooth at idle (was going to do the glass of beer test, but decided to drink it instead ) There is a little nailing when cold, but think that's normal; plus there are only about 300 miles on the injectors. I heard it take a little time to "seat"/quiet down? Not sure though?

The guy down the road has the A-B light and will make sure it's right on track for timing. I agree, I don't think that's it either.

Maybe a dripping injector.......

If you were looking through the Hole in the IP Governor Housing where the RIV or IP Timing/Locking tools are supposed to go it is 15 Degrees After Top Dead Center because that is where the little raise part inside is set at.

If there was a Drip Timing spec for your Engine it would be timed someplace Before Top Dead Center.

You might contact C Sean Watts and ask if he has any ideas, could it even be a delivery-valve issue?

I've not heard of a Monark pump. Is this a reman Bosch or something different?

I will call Sean - The Monark pump is basically just an original housing shell with all NEW internal parts. The alda, elec idle controler, elements, and everything is new. It was shipped from Germany to us. Apparently, they are the supplier for MB now; but don't hold me to it.

Again, only about 300 miles on it so far.

Here area few pics of this expensive part....(Sean came over to help me install it)
