this issue only pops up once every few months. when i start the car the idle is high..say 200-300rpms higher than usual..but when i press the brake the idle drops to normal. release the brake and the idle raises again. itll do this for about a day while im driving around. then would disappear for months. i have no idea where to start looking on this issue. 99 e300 t d.

any ideas?

I'd take a look at the mechanical side of things first.

Pull the mat away from the pedal and vacuum the junk out, make certain the cable isn't binding, then move to the poetntioner and make sure when the pedal is depressed and released that the tension is sufficient engouh to return it to its low idle position.
