Too much storage in a 124?
All of them have door pockets and map-pockets on the seatbacks.
The early ones had a glovebox also. In '91 the passenger airbag became optional, so the glovebox was replaced by the center-console box. In '94 the airbag became standard, so the armrest became a storage/phone armrest and the center console tambour-door compartment standard. So, if you have an early one with a glovebox, and add a center-console box, then a storage armrest, it seems like overkill. I've done this and swapped the seats to late leather ones to have a real pocket on the back instead of the magazine net. Now I find that the glovebox is primary for most storage items, door pocket for frequently-accessed items, center-console box pretty useless as it's under the armrest (thinking of removing the box and going back to the open-top tray). What I'd really like is a drink-holder. Plenty of storage for small items, but nowhere to keep a drink from spilling. What was I thinking?

There's a drink holder in every w124.
Open the glovebox, and let the door fall open. It sits perfectly horizontal and you'll see standard coffee cup size depressions where you can rest drinks while having your picnic in the car.

I know those are there, if I ate at a drive-in I guess I'd be fine, but I'd like somewhere to stick my drink or water bottle when I'm moving.
I won't drill into the door panel, already replaced the leather door panels because someone else did that on my '95, and don't really see an eloquent solution. The armrest would be perfect if it had a flip-out or slide-out drink holder like many other cars, I'm just not resourceful enough to do that. The center-console storage area works, .. easy enough to mount something there but it's then under the armrest and difficult to access. I'll probably live without, I've had 124s for 20years without a proper drink holder, it's just a pain. I think I'd be willing to donate my extra storage-armrest for a proper drink-holder conversion, ... I have a pop-out one from an A4 that would fit (was going in where the ashtray was, until gauges showed up there).

my 93 300 has both the console slide storage, and the armrest storage.

If you figure out a drink holder let me know. I got a stupid ash tray and don't even know anyone that smokes but on long rides everyone brings a drink. No power outlet for the GPS either. For all the advanced features seems as though they overlooked the basics. I really, really want a drink holder

The first picture is the POS door type that fail within a year. The second picture is my hastily constructed 3 cup holder. It was made out of some left over quartersawn prefinished oak. It only holds one cup when the armrest is down which is just right for me. You can buy a 12v splitter at Radio Shack for under $10. I have one that has 3 outlets. 1 for the Valentine 1, 2 for the GPS and 3 for the occasional cell phone charge. WOW, my seats really have a bad case of "pinkomino".

I use the arm rest all the time but I guess that is better than no drink holder. Thanks for the photos. It isn't that I don't have an outlet for the GPS, I just use the cig lighter in the ashtray. Just there isn't an engineered in power outlet. Got any photos for one of them

Drinks in motion, now I understand! For that, my wife holds my cup.

I replaced the ashtray with a zebrano panel that holds two gauges, a 12v outlet, and a USB charging outlet. Problem solved there. I considered a second 12v outlet instead of the USB since I'll be installing a stereo with USB, but my Droid likes the extra USB outlet and it's smaller, looks more modern. Just difficult to find a rectangular-hole drill bit.
I'm thinking of doing something like a bicycle water-bottle holder that will simply hook/clamp into the front of the armrest when it's latched closed. Seems simple for one drink anyway, passenger has free hands. Funny thing when we had some Mercedes Engineers over, I asked about the cupholder thing. I was told that the big boss was over in the US and saw a Honda Gold Wing with cupholders, thought it was rediculous that we need to have a drink with us when we're driving.

Using a bottle for your drinks than can be clicked shut and won't leak is a good solution too. Can just toss it in the passenger seat then.

Put a flip open one in the roll top wood box. We did that in my old '94.

Idioten Amerikaners
The Engineers in Stuttgart see no need for a Beverage Holder as an added
distraction, At Speed. 'Wanna "Drink" ? Pull over, Park and Drown Yourself. Everyone ELSE on Planet Earth sees arriving SAFELY ,without a detour to the E.R. 'Cause some CLOWN has to have GPS,COFFEE,Etc. Behind the Wheel as a PLUS!!!

The Engineers at Stuttgart SAW no need, ... but have been designing cupholders in ever since.
I hear what you're saying, and have had personal discussions with said Engineers at Stuttgart since I worked directly with them. However, those discussions included the irony that there are ASHTRAYS, and studies have shown that smoking while driving is an unsafe distraction, ... so the safety thing is bull and we all know it. Ever see what a driver does when the "hotbox" falls off of the end of his cigarette while driving? I'll happily keep a bottle of water or a soda in my reach while driving a distance thank you.

A reusable bottle is a pain on long trips. You stop and pee, buy a drink and hit the road. Might be coffee in the morning, water in the afternoon and mountain dew later in the day. Ever had mountain dew in a cup that had coffee? I like the idea of a panel with a power outlet and USB for charging. Got any photos? was it easy to attach and hide the attachment method? |
