Will bigger exhaust help?

I was just wondering. Will an '80 300SD have any power benefit from better exhaust or will it just be louder? I'm generally a believer in OEM equipment.

Thanks

People on here who have reported exhaust mods with no other changes report slightly faster turbo spool up, and not much else in the way of performance gains.

X2

If you want a loud car, a big exhaust pipe will do it. Turbo spool up could be faster. If you want extra HP you need to increase the boost pressure & fuel. Simply, extra power requires extra fuel & air. There are limits though. You have a big heavy car, not a race car. Best you do some reading in the diesel performance sub forum at the top of the page.

Well, my car needs new exhaust and I was just wondering if larger pipes would help performance. I'm not interested in hot-rodding. It is what it is and I'm OK with it

I have taken off the rear muffler on at least three of my benzes. I like to hear a little exhaust noise. I found that I got a little better mileage, perhaps a half mpg or even possibley a mpg. It was hard to be sure though.

I generally took off the factory muff and stored it, replacing it with a $40 pipe bent by the local muff shop guy, then before selling the car I put the stock muff back on.

like said above, you will notice faster spool ups. like 1800rpm turbo kicking in, instead of 2000... and it'll be louder...

Take out the resonator instead of the rear pipe.

I have a 2.5" (same as stock pipe) straight pipe and I have ever so slightly better spool up and torque off the line, but thats about it. And its a LOT louder than a stock exhaust system.

Not sure how big of a deal this is on a benz but I know a lot of the diesel truck guys like bigger exhaust systems because it will lower exhaust gas temps. Which in turn will extend the life of the turbo, head gasket, etc...

Thats true if you're doing a turbo back exhaust, I.e. Replace the downpipe with a larger, smooth bend downpipe. However looking at my w124 the stock downpipe, on the stock turbo, looks pretty good.

A cat back isn't going to drop your egts a ton if the factory exhaust isn't all the restrictive.

As normal Skippy is right. My exhaust rusted out, so went with a 3inch stainless steel straight pipe. The turbo does spool up faster, but I can't say I have more power. Truthfully, I haven't dino'ed her.
