exhaust pipe clunking trailing arm
After longer highway trips, my exhaust pipe starts banging where it crosses the trailing arm. I know because the pipe is visibly dented. Anyone have any experience with this?
I replaced the hangers before posting just to make sure it wasn't that simple. I even used the expensive reinforced ones! |
I just popped my head under my 300D and don't see how the pipe could contact the trailing arm unless it was seriously bent out of position.

I'll take a photo tomorrow in the light. Maybe i'm misidentifying the trailing arm? It's the part of the rear suspension that extends farthest towards the front end.
Maybe this is a coupe thing? |
Pics are always a help. I was wondering if the exhaust routing was different between the sedan and the coupe.

hangers are new, i'll double check clamp

So, regardless of what the pipe is hitting, it IS hitting the underside of the car. I'm assuming this is related to my idle shake, because the exhaust will rock with the motor, right?

Exhaust
rocks with motor yes. |
Sorry, still no photo, haven't been on the lift.
Went after engine shake to address the exhaust movement. Removing and re-inserting the rack damper bolt seems to have revived it's voodoo and smoothed out the engine, no telling yet if that will keep my exhaust from flagellating. |
I've had exhaust hangers come apart pretty quickly, some make sure you look at them again. There is also a hanger on the trans, might make sure it's tight there.

Ugh, I'm having a similar problem...I hate the sound of the exhaust vibrating against the frame...between that and the slight exhaust leak at the manifold it makes it sound like the car is falling apart, or a total clunker. It doesn't do it all the time though. Replaced the entire exhaust and it was fine for awhile but now the back of the muffler is hitting the frame again in that one spot. If only I could find a new exhaust manifold then I'd bother messing with the positioning of the rest of the exhaust again too.

ok, could you back the car up on ramps, and get a shot of the underside of the car?
I still fail to see how the pipe is hitting the trailing arm... |
