Bendix Caliper Piston overhaul. Question..
Decided to make a new thread regarding tis specific problem/question I have since dismantling the caliper on my 85 300TD w123.
As seen in the attached image, I have a repair kit that was purchsed for this particular caliper and year, I have what looks like people have described as a Heat Sheild amongst the seal and dust boot, However I dont see how this is supposed to fit onto the piston. It looks similar but different from what is attached to the piston. There is no way the new sheild will fit snugly on any part of the pistons "sheild". Is it supposed to be separated and loose from the piston? Or is this simply the wrong part. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

The old heat shield must be removed before the new one can be installed.

How is one to do that? It looks permanently in place. Theres a round bolt-looking object in the bottom of the hollow of the piston but its round.
Either it was bolt you can remove and its rusted out of shape, or its a rivet of some kind put permanently in place. Is this whats retaining the sheild in place? |

The shield it just pressed into the piston. It's held in place by an inteference fit betwen the inner lip on the shield and the interior circumference of the piston. Just grap the old shield with a pair of pliers and rip it out.

When you install it make sure that the heat shield goes on the correct way => The little lips at the end are to stop the brake pads when you insert them into the caliper. My ATE calipers had specific instructions - contained in the reseal pack about the orientation of the piston within the caliper - check your Bendix packaging. It is best to check now as if you install the shield incorrectly and you have to remove it to refit it - well take a look at the old shield when you pull it off... you'll see what I mean.
