Using a OM617 Turbo Long Block in '75 300d?

Hello All!

Found a nice W115 '75 300D with a bad motor (bad knock) and thought that since the 75 motor is a normally aspirated OM617 motor, could'nt I just use a used OM617TD long block (minus turbo) and just hang all the original manifolds, IP, etc off this stripped down OM617 from a later year? Any problems that anyone foresees? Seems like the North Bay has plenty of used engines, I have two available to choose from, one as little as two hundred bucks that comes with a '83 300sd with a bad trans-engine has about 180,00 on it. My current '82 300sd has over 360,000 miles on it and still turns heads - I must say, I love the 115's!

I seem to recall something about the oil filter location being incompatible, but I think there's a workaround for that. Someone here will recall a thread or proper search terms to find it.

thanks, but it sounds like if I strip the old block thoroughly for everything that might be needed (motor mount arms, etc.) and then carefully swap to new block and go to work, it should be just fine and a nice upgrade to beefier pistons, etc C'mon! Am I crazy or what?!! Where's VStech when you need him?

I think you'll find that the oil pan configuration is different because the oil pump is chain driven on the OM617a. You've also got to think about blocking off the oil to the turbo somehow or other (only if you're not going to use it of course!).

I guess the mounting points on the block are the same for the engine mounts and the transmission adapter etc etc

But why not use the turbo if you can get the block to fit in the engine bay?

I also think the oil filter is in a different location on the 115 617's.

it is but I am thinking since I have all the original fittings etc that I can remove them from an older style OM617 engine (the W115 300D car) and put them on the later style OM617 engine long block . . . .has anyone done this?

Ah, it has now been explained to me that the castings on the block are different which explains why the oil filter, etc would be a pita!

yeah, you have to go with an adapter and a remote filter. But it has been done by a few. And it would be a real nice upgrade, I think about it every time I'm climbing a steep hill lol.
