Report from Chile

Just spent 10 days in the wonderful country of Chile.

Lots and Lots of diesels.

VW trucks
Ford Ranger pickup diesels
Toyota car and pickup diesels
Hyundai diesel vans
My Chev Colorado in a diesel
Gasoline was about $6/gal. Diesel slightly cheaper.

But ... Only saw one MB diesel, a 300TD at Vina del Mar.

I was passed by a MB SUV going about 90+ mph on route 199 outside Pucon.

End of report.

Walking isn't a lost art: one must, by some means, get to the garage.

Seems like a diesel Ranger would be a big seller here in the US.

I've been saying that for quite some time. Based on what I saw under the hood of the one I looked at in Afghanistan, I'm pretty sure the current ones won't pass U.S. emissions standards. Ford apparently doesn't think it would be worth their investment to make a version that does.

Global Vehicles estimated that the Mahindra would sell between 30-50K truck per year in the US. I would think that a diesel Ranger would be at least as successful. But as usual, the "big three" are asleep at the switch.

I walked around a Mahindra and it looked pretty good. Seems tall and boxy like the first Troopers.
It's full sized though not a little cramped thing.
I asked a guy what their reputation was and he said pretty good as far as he knew.
