Fan Clutch 300 SDL

Has anyone ever changed one? Is it a PITA to do? Mine has decided to stay on all the time.

From what I can see I need to do the following

Pull Fan shroud
pull fan from hub
pull hub from drive

Reverse the process.

Is that all or it there more too it?

You loosen the fan shroud, it can't come out until the fan is removed.

Can I remove the fan and hub together by removing the allen head screw in the center of the clutch?

yes....remove the hex bolt and it will come off together. I use a hex wrench taped into a length of copper tubing that extends it above the radiator to remove the bolt. Works well. simple. 87 300SDL.

Yes, that's how you remove it. If you leave the belt on it works well as a counterhold.

I just replaced mine on my 94 S350D. I was able to get on the bolt (8mm Allen wrench) without pulling the shroud. The torque on mine is 45nm so you need to get a good grip on the belt when you torque it back down. The clutch on mine is held in place with 3 10mm hex bolts. I always blue locktite turning bolts in place also. Hate to have the fan come off on you.

Strap Wrench...I could not get the belt to grip the pulley well enough when trying to undo the hex bolt. Picked up a $6.00 Harbor Freight rubber strap wrench...pulled the belt off the pulley. Strap wrench worked great. Also put a 10mm long socket on a long 3/8" extension and slid it over the end of the hex wrench for more leverage.

Re: Fan shroud. Just unclip the top clips lift and slide an inch or two toward the motor. When the fan is loose pull them out together. Mount the clutch to the fan while out of the car. R & R is reverse.

2nd the lock-tite application. I once had the bolt back out...ugh

Mine is an 8 mm and the blue if enough, you may want to take it off again sometime.

I don't know what diamond shaped piece you're talking about. The bimetallic strip faces the radiator.
