ball joint wear

Blew a strut mount today, with strut removed I can feel a small amount of vertical play in the ball joint. Before strut removal I could not feel any play, absolutely no lateral play. Is the ball joint NFG or is this normal or at least acceptable?

rubber broke away from the steel mounting ring. Rubber not split, just came unbonded.

On a side note, I am amazed a 25 year old car comes apart this well. nothing yet has been siezed.
