Valve Adjustment, Woodbridge or Alexandria, VA

Hey guys,
I know this should be in the car shop section but I know it gets a lot less traffic than here. Anyway, I am wondering if anyone in Woodbridge or Alexandria, VA knows of a good place to go for a valve adjustment? It is getting harder and harder to find someone to work on my 85 300SD!
Thank you in advance!

You'd probably be able to find a forum member nearby who can do the entire job in less than an hour. Pay in a 24 pack of beer!

I agree a member could do it. However in Fairfax City there are 2 shops that come to mind. Both of them off Pickett Rd, WB Motors and Yoons Motors.
Another shop is in Falls Church and very well known. Within walking distance of West Falls Church Metro. He used to advertise all the time in the MBCCA magazine. Crud! his shop did all the work on Jack Kent Cookes ( think Washington Redskins) Benz's back in the day. Don Poole Motors !
I know there are some other good shops closer to you though.

any chance you'd like to do it yourself?
it's not terribly difficult or expensive to do.
the tools needed are not expensive or hard to find either.

There is a DIY thread on the forum just down a bit at the moment.
Its not that hard.
Give yourself an afternoon to do it the first time.

" it is getting harder and harder to find someone to work on your car " .. that is a sign from above that it is time for you to learn to do it.... and you really can not trust anyone else to be as interested in your car as you are...

I suggest for the first afternoon that you have some of these in the freezer first..

http://www.hillcountrymfg.com/

and that you not try being excessively frugal about the wrenches for adjusting them..
I spent three hours bent over the fender and then could not access the number five valves... next to the firewall....had to button it back up , wait till I could go to the dealer on a week day and unbutton it again...

You need the spooning wrenches and the third hand wrench... makes it way easier...
Do not let people talk you out of those by saying they have never needed them.. they may be lying about that just to get attention.....LOL.... it happens.... one upmanship..
Hubris, etc...

I totally see where some would need the spring holder wrench. I have not needed it, but I'm an exceptionally skilled repairman, the average DIY may not have the aptitude to handle the task without the right tools.

I would love to show someone how to do a valve adjustment. I swear the only reason it takes me longer than 20 minutes is because some monkey jacked up the adjustment nuts on the first cylinder so I have to remove the rubber return lines and use needle nose pliers to do the adjustment.

Do the maintenance yourself! You'll ask yourself right away why you haven't done it sooner and the wrenches will begin to pay for themselves after two, three, and four adjustments.

I thought the ' bent over the fender for 3 hours ' would give you a hint that those ice packs were for the back muscles.... but with a couple of bar clamps I guess they could be used for the temple areas on both sides of the head....

It would never occur to me to put ice on my hands... when my knuckles get cold I go inside and quit... nothing worse than banging a knuckle which is already cold...

I am open to learning how to do the adjustment and anything else. A person has to with these cars. I called a shop I used before to do the adjustment. They told me point blank the car was to old. The mechanic that knew the cars has retired from the shop. The problem I have is that lack the confidence needed to open up the top of the motor. I have learned a lot on this forum on how to fix things and have had success. I gotta suck it up and do it to keep the beast running! Thank you everyone for your input. Appreciate it!

Do you have a video camera ?

Ever heard of Youtube.com ?

We need some of those types of videos...

Problems are most likely to show up with a ' new to me ' car...after getting the first valve adjustment done I did not have the problems with those rear valves ... So I suspect that some of these people who " POOH POOH " having the wrenches specified in the FSM ... simply acquired a car which had been regularly maintained over the PO's time with it....
If you find ONE really hard stuck valve adjustment cap or locking nut... you will understand why that lower special ( THIRD HAND ) wrench is important.
Also the fact that it sits in place by itself... using that little fold down leg.. that is half the trick..
