OM617 Transmission Removal Question

I am in the process of removing the transmission from my 1985 300TD to replace the front pump and I am wondering if I need to remove the starter bolts to get the transmission free. I have all of the external connections removed from the transmission, have removed the torque converter bolts, and have broken free all of the transmission to engine bolts except the ones on top. Of course, the starter bolts seem super stuck and I am apt to not mess with them unless I have to. I have read all I can find on splitting the transmission from the engine and nothing says much about the starter. I would also be curious to see if there are any members in central NC with a transmission jack I might could rent or borrow.
Thanks!

Shane

Yes, you need to remove the starter bolts to separate the transmission from the engine. You will need to remove a total of 9 bolts, one of which has a nut on the backside.

boooooooooo

I was afraid of that. Any tips for getting best access to those bolts at the top of the transmission?
Thanks,

Shane

Lots of threads on various means of removing the starter. Need 3' of extensions, breaker bar, a universal joint and an allen socket. Go up alongside the transmission from the back of the transmission to reach the top bolt. Make sure you clean out the inside of the allen bolt before starting. That bolt is typically very tight and needs a lot of force to break it froo.

Try a 1/2" breaker bar with a set of loooong sloppy extensions.

You are going to need the same basic setup to get at the two top bolts, too.

Also you'll need to drop the tail of the trans by unbolting the trans mount and center support bearing so you can get the extensions starting from the tail up and over to the top 2 bolts. You must have the car high enough to get leverage on the breaker bar to break the bolts free.
