I have no idea. I don't have any manuals for the 124, but I'll bet someone on the forum does.

Front only in 124.

The seatbelt pre-tensioner devices are in a can attached to the seatbelt retractor in the B-pillar. A charge in the metal cylinder pulls a cable that spins and pre-tensions the belt.

The intent is to pull the seatbelt tight against the occupant and remove all slack in the belt and tensioner. This prevents the often severe "secondary collision" where the impact has begun to decelerate the car, and the occupant is still moving forward unimpeded until (s)he impacts the seatbelt of the now much slower moving vehicle. An excellent feature.

It also keeps the occupant closer to the seat and in a better protected/controlled position.

In my '85 quattro it was accomplished by a cable system that was mechanically pulled, ... by the displacement of the engine and transmission. A bit more crude it would seem, but inaffected by loss of power or electronic failure.
