W115 Failed Oil Pump?
So last night, I fired up my $300.00 '75 W115 300d after valve adjustment, draining tank, add fresh fuel, changing fuel filters, diesel purge to main fuel filter and fast glow kit. Car started up quickly and held idle with little to no smoke - The clatter which I noticed when I first started the car one week prior was still very evident (much to my disappointment after above maint/repairs)and I noticed that I had oil pressure both times while car was running. I shut down engine and then noticed when cranking that oil pressure was not building? -also,engine did not want to fire again although warm???? I am wondering now if the loud "clatter" was a failing oil pump and perhaps last night, after running for a short time, oil pump finally gave out which would explain oil pressure loss? Perhaps oil pressure was able to build while cold but once warm and thinned pump could not develop pressure? Any thoughts here? Also, does anyone know if the 123 300d OM617 (non turbo) oil pump fit the w115 300d Om617? Thanks! Adventures in wrenching land . . . What does a failing oil pump sound like anyway?
(Update): Head is coming off, indie MB mechanic thinks there is debris sitting on top of one of the pistons -should be interesting to see what he finds. I would have pulled the head myself but short on time these days. Last edited by warmblood58; 05-12-2011 at 06:20 PM. |

The Oil Pump on the older models is driven somewhat like a car distributor; by a worm gear on the IP Timer shaft.
It or the Bushings that it rides in could be worn out. They are a matched set and new ones are expensive. There is a plug that can be removed (somewhere in front of the Fuel Injection Pump on the Engine Block) over the spot where the Oil Pump Shaft goes. It maybe you could view the Timer/Shaft Gears from there. I have also read of issues with the Pressure Relieve Vale or Pressure Relief Valve spring inside of he Oil Pump. The older model Timing Chain Tensioners are more dependent on the Oil Pressure to tension the chain than the newer ones. There is no ratchet to hold the tensioner plunger in place when the Oil Pressure is low. Plugged Oil Filter Screen?

On my 1975 W115 300D, the oil pressure gauge stays pegged under normal running conditions.... At idle it will drop to about midpoint. Nothing to worry about. Watch the oil pressure gauge when the engine is running, not when you are trying to start it. I wouldn't draw any conclusions about the oil pump based on that. I have a spare oil pump, by the way, if you need one..... but I doubt if you really need one, based on what you have posted so far.

the oil pressure you are indicating is 45psi, not 4.5 bar (which would be 67.5psi) many of the older benz clusters are indicated in american readouts instead of metric...

The oil pump should be the same style in the 115 NA as the 123 NA and I would not be surprised if they interchange but be very careful as there are several versions of oil pumps out there and there are differences.
For example when we built my 300 Euro na we compared its oil pump to a spare 240 oil pump and they look the same from the outside but if they are opened up the pumping gears are bigger in the 300 pump. Wider I think. Good luck!

See update to thread -it looks like I have some debris sitting on top of one of the pistons -will find out this afternoon when head comes off -this explains the noise!
