One thing led to another...
I had a pc of wood holding up my hood on an 85 300SD. Started up the car and then, vibration was enough to make the wood strip fall, into the area of the power steering pump. I shut the car off and looked under the hood. The belt was on the lower pulley in the proper orientation but on the pulley at the power steering pump it was flipped and riding on the outer rim.
This is where i screwed up for the second time. I loosened the 3 mounting bolts and then decided to try to find the adjustment bolt or something to adjust the tension... too late, I found it on the top right corner of the pump and could see inside, that I distorted some type of nut..... Can I buy just the adjusting parts or did I really mess this up bad? Also, if I pulled hard on the pump to get it back into place, but it's not really up to proper tension, is in unwise to drive it? What would happen if I drive the car with a slack ps pump belt? I started the vehicle and turned the steering at idle but not sure about highway speeds and a loose belt...

It's not clear what you did to damage the adjuster... did you pry on it with a bar or something? Your best bet might be to stop by a junk yard; 300's are usually pretty plentiful, and now that you know how one works you can get a replacement adjuster bolt and nut easily.
As far as driving it, you probably can drive it OK, provided that the belt is not so loose that it could fall off and tangle up with something else under the hood. It might squeal, but that's not a big deal for a trip to the junk yard. You could take the belt off completely, and you'd just not have power-assisted steering... parallel parking won't be as easy as it usually is. Kurt

Agreed, the attachment shows an exploded view.

Haven't people reported bits flying off the front of the engine and slicing through oil cooler lines? I can't remember if it was the belt though - sounds unlikely...
...anyone remember what it was?

Ok, what I did was this... Imagine the belt being completely flipped around on pully 8, so the belt was in extra tension....... I loosened bolt 59 and nut 68 as well as two other mounting bolts. Which made the pump pull away from the part #20. Result was that there was major pressure on part #77...
Will need part 77. What does it attach to, if anything? Or does it slide up and down in the channel, allowing adjustment in tension? Did not take pump completely off, I just tried to tension the belt and remount... Hope this info helps. Will drive with the radio off for now... I have AAA in case

While you are fixing all that, best you do something about the hinges on your hood. Bits of wood propping the hood up is not ok. Probably a simple fix. You are lucky the wood didnt fly back out & cause injury.

what's wrong with your hinges? the 123/126 hood support springs are pretty robust. did rust kill them?
anyway, the power steering belt is not under much load, like the alt belts are. as long as the belt is good, and you have it close to tight, it should stay in position. if your motor mounts are bad, you can damage your oil cooler lines with the power steering belt, so be sure and check that.

Thanks for the info. To answer the question about the hinges. Drivers side hinge broke at the one joint. No lube, it simply split one day while opening hood... Thought the force cracked the windshield. The hood shot back that hard. So I undid the spring to eliminate that tension, only prob is that the hood does not want to defy gravity....
I found the part #77 at local Mercedes dealer for under $2.00... will pick it up tomorrow... might want to sell this 300 SD 1985. Found a 300 TD wagon that more fits my needs.... I am in NJ, close to Easton PA....
