I'm going with badly adjusted alda and a dirty air filter...

I agree that this is an air/fuel ratio problem. If your not too squeamish about the ALDA, just take it off. I did & it solve a LOT of my problems...

That would be ideal, but it falls under something I can't do, don't have the tools. Maybe one day soon I guess

The ALDA is what prevents a rich-running situation like this, removing it would likely make it worse.

I'd suspect that the turbo isn't building enough boost (exhaust leak or weak wastegate spring?), but the ALDA should limit fuel to prevent smoke in such a case.

No idea. it's been better the last few days. Not as black and not as long and huge cloud, It's just a spurt on take off then clear for the most part. I would fiddle with it some but now I cant (see Skid pan topic) so. I guess for know it's a wait and see sort of thing

... how's the performance with the car?
perhaps a lighter foot on takeoff? I'm guessing here, but I bet it's quite perky, and you got it that way from the previous owner? perhaps he adjusted the alda too rich. if that's the case, look at the adjuster nut/screw on top of it, and loosen the 10mm lock nut, and turn the screw in 1/4 turn at a time until the smoke stops.
if the car is NOT perky, I'm leaning towards the cat being plugged partially. *10 minutes with a sawzall, and a pair of clamps holding a bypass tube should solve it.

before 2000RPM it's a dog. After 2 It's a hot shot. Gentile with the pedal is slooooooow going It's been sluggy for awhile. I attributed it to just the vac leaks in the boost circuit. I've never driven another diesel 124 wagon or other 124 603 period, so I have no frame of reference on this... I know my shift points are not stock as far as I can tell...

I agree that removing the ALDA may make the smoking worse, but for some reason I still think that's the way to go. You could take the ALDA off, drive the car for a few days & if it DOES smoke worse reinstall. Removal is not difficult, nor is reinstallation. And you do not need special tools. I used a couple of adjustable wrenches to get mine off. Sure, it was a pain in the a** & took about 30 minutes, but it can be done fairly easily.

I would try adjust the ALDA "down" to reduce smoke, assuming you don't have other problems like excessive drag on the AC compressor. There is no point in taking it off to try to reduce smoke, that will increase smoke. If you don't care about smoke and want to maximize the power, try removing it.

seems like a boost issue there. My 603 in the SDL and in the 300D never had any issues like you mentioned yours is having.

I'd make sure there are no leaks in the boost/ALDA circuit.
