om617 Head removal question
What holds the rocker assemblies in place. I cannot get to the head bolts with out removing them. My head bolt socket is not long enough to reach down to the head bolts because the notch in the rocker towers is to small. There is a hole in the center of each, I assume there is a bolt holding it to the head. I cannot see into the hole. Does anyone know what kind of bolt, hex, star, other? and size tool I will need.
thanks. |

OM617 rocker arm problem? (Please note the group of 2 rocker arms are on the front part of the engine - and the group of 3 are on the back - over cylinders 3,4 and 5 => If you have time to read through the thread you'll find out why that can cause problems!) The head bolts can be of 2 types - hex head (in which case their tightness needs to be checked after a specified time in the FSM - I forget what it is - I'll look it up if you need it) - or a 12 point star type. According to vstech (reliable source) they are tripple square keys Daft W123 300D nut and bolts sizes From this thread:- Daft W123 300D nut and bolts sizes The rocker arm bolts do not go lower than the head gasket. The camshaft tower bolts do.

I actually just need to take off the head. I am only trying to lighten up my mock up block. I am going to prop it up on the damper side so I can center my transmission on to the back side and make my bell housing adapter.
Thanks for the awesome reply! |

LOL, apparently someone previous had taken out the long hex bolts which hold the rocker onto the head, just leaving the hole. so, here i am trying to stick long hex wrenches down the empty holes wondering where the top of the bolt is. i was over it, so i took a piece of wood and a hammer, they popped right off. all that was holding them was the dowels. to funny.

Oh and take a look at the pictures posted in the first thread in my first reply of the bolts you need to put the rocker towers back in place. They are waisted bolts - and not very cheap if you ask the dealer!

Im actually not putting it back together. it was a bad engine that was given to me. I am using it to mock up my adapter plate so i can bolt my om617 to a toyota r150f and install it into my T100. i only wanted to take off the head to make it a little lighter.

The FSM chapter 01-405 gives three lengths for "double hex head" bolts - information is on the 1st page of the PDF will that do?
