Mann Pro-Vent CCV

Has anyone used one of these in a benz?
Was just looking at one online, as a way to capture some of the blowby oil smoke, and help reduce our oil consumption.

http://www.reliableindustries.com/catalog/MNH/provent.php

or is there a better oil capturing device?

I don't see how adding one of those units could hurt if you were looking to reduce the amount of blowby your engine is injesting. The oil separators that MB installed, both integral to the air filter housing and the standalone type found on 240D's are pretty simple units without a real filter. The Provent offers a changeable filter and likely works better than any stock unit as IIRC they were designed for heavy machinery and trucks? I have heard they are not cheap either. RT

While I'm sure there are other (more expensive) options out there, the 240D separator works quite well, when plumbed correctly in other configurations. I have one on my OM603 that works to keep oil spray from fouling up the internal cooling capacity of the intercooler.

Kelly is willing to invest the money to keep the oil in the car as much as possible. For convienance as well as for the envinronment.

Thanks for the responses. We may just get one of these if I cant find a 240D unit.

I just vent it in my Powerstroke motor to the exhaust.

part of our motivation is to "capture" some of that oil before it goes off out the tailpipe.

Well, then you have to go that route and pay for the thing and clean filters or what it takes.

On my Powerstroke I had oily intercooler boots. On the E300, I had dirty runners because of the EGR and the oily fumes plumbed into the turbo

Yes but I use the exhaust to suck the crankcase fumes so it doesn't just vent only.

Have Provents on both the '87 and the '05 Jeep Liberty CRD.

Try www.airnowsupply.com , they're a little bit cheaper than Reliable Industries, both for the unit and replacement filters.

These filters are designed to handle 200 liters/minute of air flow, and last for a year before changeout on a 500 HP diesel. And if you're really creative, you can plumb the oil drain off the bottom back to the sump.

The one on the 2.8 L VM Motori engine in the Jeep is filthy black and soaked with oil inside of 3000 miles, drain a couple ounces of oil out the bottom each month.

The one on the '87, after 3000 miles it has a film of oil on the upper lip of the filter cartridge, and enough has dripped down that it's just starting to turn the bottom inch of the filter element from white to black, nothing yet in the bottom of the housing or the drain.

When I first got the '87, with 132K miles on it, there was so much oil collected in the inlet boot to the turbo and running down the side of the engine, it looked like the turbo drain was leaking big time.

I hate cleaning intake manifolds and intercoolers, so it was worth it in my book.

Like I said.....

IIRC, the 240 separator can be difficult to find and I think someone posted here that it was @$70 from the dealer? If so, the Provent is not a lot more money for possibly a whole lot more performance.
