Things to be AWARE of when checking out a 1991 300d

Hello,

I came across a 1991 300d in very nice conditon. Everything works, paint is in great shape, no dings, dents or rust. The car has around 130k on it. The a/c blows cold and seats are in excellent condition as is the dash.

Are these engines prone to any sort of failures.

I have owned a number of w123 diesels but nothing newer.

Thanks!

there is a recall notice/service notice on the timing chain cam gear. they are known to wear quickly and cause skipped tooth/chain breakage. not usually a problem until after 200k

vacuum lines are critical to proper engine operation. much faster and more efficient than any of the 123 diesels,
Pics?

I am of the opinion that if you come accross ones like you described then you need to make a committment to purchase it when you check it out. Ones in good condition with low miles are hard to find. The secret is to be able to take your time looking.

Yeah it was on craigslist and a buddy went a snapped a couple pics for me. I was in the works of getting it inspected and someone purchased it.

Here it is:

Are you sure about this? I thought this was only on certain serial number ranges and that a 91 wouldn't be in the affected range.

I believe this is the TSB:

Not sure if it plagued the entire production year range, but look into evaporator leak requiring evap replacement - dash dismantling 22 hr job North of $2K.

22hours? I had the entire dash, seats, carpets, header, door cards out in 2.5hours and I can't imagine that pulling the HVAC unit would take more than another 2.

When I was dealing with a leaking evaporator, it was quoted to me as a 16 hr. job.

If the add was true overall. You may be quite awhile finding anything comparable. Carfax or records are requiresd to verify lower milage usually. Never take the indicated odometer reading as factual by itself.

Make a deposit situation with paperwork subject to inspection to tie up a car rather than leave it open as you did if seriously interested. You where correct by the way the car should be inspected properly before purchase.

It was on the slightly high end of pricing but it looks like it was probably worth it. The interior says alot. Assuming that the pic is at the guys house that was selling looks to me to be indicative of how the car has been cared for. Looks like it could afford to keep it up.
