82SD oil boss leaking behind tach pickup...

there is a 24mm ish bolt with a copper crush washer behind the bracket for the tach pickup/TDC alignment tab... mine was backed out about 2 full turns and leaking oil.
it looks like you have to remove the bracket to torque the bolt down... WTF!!!
I spun it as tight as I could with my fingers KNOWING it will back right back out soon...
ARRRRGH!!!
what's it for?
what a horrid placement for a passage plug...

The missing one from the above pics looks like the one I'm looking at on a 617 I have torn down. Best I can tell, its sole purpose is to hold the timing tab and tach pickup on, but it is the one that does not have a copper washer (#1 in the lower right attached pic). It goes through the front of the block, but does not protrude through to hold any timing components in place or anything else. Was this used for any other equipment on an earlier 617 and perhaps the same block manufacturing process was used for later production dates??? The other one I suspect you are referring to that is in the picture and has the copper washer also has a pin made onto it that allows the lower timing chain guide to pivot(#2 in the attached pic to the lower right). I took pics of each. The SM calls it an "upper bearing bolt with closing plug" and appears to hold #93a - "inner slide rail"

inner slide rail eh? sounds important, I guess my finger tight ain't good enough. however, the bolt cannot come all the way out, because of the bracket. it does stain my driveway nicely though.

John,

I can't get to the back of my garage at the moment where my engine is - wife's Birthday party tomorrow and it is full of the kid's bikes etc etc - but I'm game to pull that cap off of my engine.

If I remember correctly it is just a cap - I think there is a draw bolt behind. And even if I'm wrong with a tight chain the chain guide probably won't go anywhere for the 10 seconds you need to put on a new copper washer.

I understand it isn't that easy to reach with a radiator and V belts in place etc etc but I think with some yoga lessons you could probably contort yourself into a good position to reach in there.

Reply / PM if you want me to check this out on Monday for you.

Do you think a man could get in there with a 24mm crow foot? The tab will have to be removed. When I took the bolt/pin combo with the crush washer off, the chain guide seemed to stay in place. And yes, the cap is just a cap.Its kinda weird that this thing would have loosened up on you, John. But if your luck is like mine, and there was a 1/1,000,000 chance of something going wrong, then DING! DING! DING! My number comes up. Good luck with it. If I can assist in any way, I am not far away.

I had a leak in that area on my 300D. I removed the bracket, loosened the other bolt several turns, cleaned it with Brake Kleen, coated the washer with RTV, and tightened it. I was afraid of removing it, as I was concerned about its holding a chain guide. That cured the leak.

To be honest it is so long since I've seen my engine in one piece I'm not sure anymore... but wouldn't a simple 24mm socket and a stubby extension work? Remove the fan shroud and perhaps remove the power steering V belt?

I did mine without removing anything using just a box and open end wrench, but removing the pulley would make the job a lot easier.

I thought it was probably do-able thanks for that!
