are 124 door lock interchangable from pre to post 90's?
I got to replace mine, the driver one was hanging and now its refusing to turn all together. Im getting into the car via pass side. On ebay there are plenty but from later models (90'and up)
Are the key locks interchangeable in between 86-89 to 90-95? |
Yes they are. The only difference is the chrome strip.
Are you considering buying a complete set so that they all match? It might make more sense to just swap the left and right side, or order a new one keyed to your car. Also, how worn is you key? Usually the key is the problem and a worn key is shortening the life of your other locks and ignition tumbler, a new key is fairly inexpensive from Mercedes. |

also, the MOST expensive is the glove box tumbler! crazy prices.... nearly 300 my cost for that one! |
Can I get a storage-box lock to match my '87? They didn't make the storage box in '87, kind of thinking I'll have to live with a separate key for it (as if locking it would actually secure anything).

I planned to get a duplicate glove box tumbler, and fit it to the storage box... now i think I'll just gather a bunch of leaves, and build it to fit my key... I'm in the same boat as you. I have the storage box, from a 93D in my 87 TD... I wanna lock it with the same key. I use the key from the 93 just fine.

I don't ever want to lock it, nothing I'd put in it is worth having the tambour door smashed to steal it anyway, I just want all of the locks to match.

fleebay has sets galore, and for 150 I think i can get a whole set + two keys and than swap the whole car to one single key. Its a "side project" while I figure out what Im going to do about the starter situation... |
hmm. I'd rather get the correct vin set, and replace the damaged tumbler from the dealer.
also, the ignition can be replaced dealer also. not bad price. around 100. so for 180 ish, you'll have the correct vin matched ignition, and door, and it comes with another vin matched key! |

I just bought a tumbler and 2 keys for my 80 240D from the dealer. so no problem for a 20 something yr old car, when mine is 31.
The problem with buying locks from e-bay or pulling them from the JY, if you lost your keys, where would you get a new set of keys? the locks and keys are are available from the dealer by the Vin # of the vehicle. even if you had the Vin# of the vehicle the locks came from, you would not be able to get the new keys. you need the registration and proof of ownership also. If the trunk lock works, it should unlock the doors also.
