That was a lot harder than it looked!

1979 240d

I received the new wheel bearing tool today + 1 of my 2 flex joints.

I happily jumped under the car and proceeded to get an education.

1) Flex joints dont go back on unless you unbolt the carrier bearing
2) It may well be my carrier bearing making all the noise - but I'm still not sure
3) that installed I moved to the wheel bearing on the drivers side.
I pulled the shaft easy enough - The new wrench was a little tight and took a couple light whacks with the ratchet head to seat.

I put a 4ft cheater bar on the ratchet, installed the wheel & dropped the car down. I then rolled it forward by hand. The cheater bar would rise up and tap the floor of the trunk and the momentum of the car would apply pressure to the bearing cap.

It took about 3 trys and it was off. I was feeling pretty good.

I repacked the bearing - which looked to be in good shape.

4) Those darn hubs dont want to go back on at all. I had heck getting it to go back through the inner bearing.

5) Finally have the bearing synched down and re-attach the axel.
6) if you didn't know - you can "dislocate" an axel. I have no idea how I did it - or even what it looks like under the boots - but the darn thing will not go completely around. I gave up for tonight - I will take another look tomorrow night.

So - busted my butt all night & I have a car that wont drive - still. But - it has lots of new parts!

explain the dislocation better...
I have heard that the splines can separate with force, but I've not had any do it.

The joint is loose - where it wasnt loose before I started messing with it. And - now that its re-installed the joint doesn't allow 360 degrees of travel. It "binds" up at the same spot. I can rotate almost all the way around then it sticks.

I dont want to force it. Plus - I was tire last night and had done enough for the evening. I'll pull it back out tonight and see if I can't get it back together.

Hopefully I wont need to cut the boot to see what happened.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Does the FSM specify how to put it back together?

It was like 8 years ago I read that warning when I was prepping to do my 81 wagon... I just remember trying to be careful to keep them from ' elongating' via gravity...

Most CV joints can fall apart if you bend them at too extreme an angle. If you slide the boot off I bet you'll find the ball bearings lying loose inside.

OK - that helps.

I need new boots anyway - but now is not the time for that discussion - I want to get it mobile again first - then I'll come back in June (funding issue...flex discs, wheel bearing tool, nozzles etc. I'm done for the month) and finish it off right.

Thanks guys!

ORV - you were correct sir. I hate when my balls fall out!

You know - they are a serious PITA getting them back in.
