Valve Adjustment Wrench Set: Homemade, Cheap, and Simple

I am finally getting started on rebuilding/restoring my W115 300D 'Marlene Diederich', and I made some valve adjustment wrenches from some thin handled bike tools. I know a bunch of guys have made these before, and some are pretty elegant examples. These are not.... But they are cheap and very simple to bend, and they do the job.

I did a write up in my blog tonight:

"Making A Pair of Homemade Valve Wrenches"

Not sure what you mean... I see 5 pics on the blog. Are you not seeing them?

I have both wrenches... One from a pair I made years ago, (misplaced one of them) and the other I made today.

If they are supposed to be interspersed in the first article about wrenches... no, I am not seeing them...

There are three wrenches suggested by the FSM for adjusting the valves.... the lower one holds the washer which is connected to the actual valve...

... no pictures at all in the wrench portion of the blog.
the other portions have pictures though.
the bike wrenches are 10.00 each? for 6.00 I got two wrenches, torched and bent them, then ground the lower wrench thin to fit the jam nut, and I sell the set for $15 plus shipping ($6.00 anywhere in the US)
I am thinking of a way to make the third wrench... not sure how to do that one.

Yes the pics are interspersed in the article. My battery just quit in this iPad .... I have been running it all day... And when I just powered up again, I didn't see the pics for a minute. I just rebooted the blog and the pics are there, all five of them.

Hmmmm. Not sure why you aren't able to get them. Sorry about that.

No I haven't made a wrench for the washer. I did adjust the valves today without it, and it seemed to go ok.

likely those pics are hosted from a image host that is set to private, or on a site that's not publicly accessed... without loging in. like maybe your idisk or something...?

You could be right... It was a little tricky getting them loaded... But it s late here now. I will have to look at it again in the next day or so.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have made about 8 sets of Homemade Valve adjustment wrenches the more traditional way from 14mm or 9/16" Combination Wrenches.

Since the ones I experimented with were made in China and I though the Heat treating might be on the soft side I experimented with bending a set cold. One bent OK but with cracked plating while the other on snapped in two.

So what works on the Bike Tools might not work on a regular Wrench.
You will not know until you do the adjustment but the Bike Tools might not be heat treated enough for the Job and the Heads might be too wide.

I cannot see the Wrench Pics either. But, I can see the Pics of the Charger and Car.

I did the valves with this tool today without a problem. Yes, I wouldn't try to bend a regular wrench cold.... But these thin ones seem ok. This procedure is geared for those who don't want to deal with the heating part. It can be done without a torch. FWIW.

I have added a note to the blog about the picture problem, hopefully I can correct it soon. Thank you for telling me.

Thank you. I am using an iPad2, which of course has no hard drive. I tried sending the pics directly to the blog from my iPhone, and although it indicated it was successful.... They were a no-show. So I tried the back door approach of sending them to my email, and then loading them to the blog, which works fine for me--- I can see them perfectly--- but, alas, no one else can. Day um.
If I can't figure out a way to 'finesse' them, as Vinny Gambini* might say, I may have to wait til I get to my PC at work to reload them the old-fashioned way. Sooooo 20th Century!

Thanks, fellas, and thanks for your patience. Obviously, I still have lots to learn, technologically. It's a Brave New World out there.

I have fiddled with the blog pics experimentally.... If some one could check for me to see if the pics are now showing up.... I would be much obliged.
