95 606 A/C evaluation

A/C worked fine for 7 years. This weekend, a/c stopped cooling. (New klima relay and new CCW recently). Shop guy said that he pulled a pound of 134 out, the system held vacuum for over an hour, then he put a more back in and it's cooling fine. He said the 134 he uses has a dye in it, so he can detect any leaks if they develop or are present.

I only have a basic understanding of this system. He's not the kind of shop guy who wants to spend time explaining things to customers, so I didn't push it.

Can someone please explain what he did? How does a system lose 134 unless there's a leak somewhere?

To me it sounds like there was a small leak that let some of the 134a out, so now that your car has leak detector dye in it the leak will be easier to spot.

What's a CCW?

There's a low refrigerant pressure switch that disables the compressor below a setpoint. The system could have been leaking slowly from day 1 and only last weekend went below the setpoint. If it held vacuum for an hour, there's a good chance it'll be good for years and years. It's possible that it leaks under pressure but not under vacuum. No need to worry about it until the AC quits again.

And the fact that it had a pound in it. That is a good thing.

I am going to assume you purchased the car 7 years ago?

I replaced the compressor and dryer on the 280k mile 95 E300 a few months ago. I don't remember if I did it as a preventive measure or if the compressor finally died. I don't think the wife ever selects economy.

ccw

Sixto asked: What's a CCW?

I meant to say CCU (Climate Control Unit). CCW is Concealed Carry Weapon permit. Oops. Sorry. Wrong forum.
