W123 300D door retainer question - a CSI dating exercise!

G'day All,

I've just started stripping down the doors on my 300D for a little bit of refurbishment and repainting and I found some "interesting evidence"...

On the driver's side of the car the doors lock mechanisms and door retainers are different from the other side of the car.

Here are two pictures of the driver's side retainers

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...1&d=1306182493

And here's a picture of the retainer on the other side of the car

The driver's side retainers look like they are a newer design, partly because they look newer, but also because the passenger side retainer looks like it is damaged. There are little wheels that run along the guides inside the retainer these are fitted to a shaft that has appears to be bent.

Question 1:-

Does anyone know when these retainers were upgraded / changed / introduced?

Question 2:-

Which door retainers are best? (I'm guessing the driver's side ones - but I thought I'd check)

At sometime or other it looks as though the driver's side of the car has been treated to replacement doors => look at the paint difference on the inner surfaces

Question 3:-

Could it be that I have copy Mercedes parts on the driver's side?

clearly something is up. The door checks/retainers are painted to match the body.

The driver's side ones are the OEM replacements you would get to replace the color matched originals. I have replaced checks in both cars and the originals are matched, but the replacements look like your DS one. The DS door checks are probably the most frequently replaced b/c they it's the most used door.

So, looks like PO replaced it at some point.

I've only seen the driver's side version. They existed on my 85TD and I think they were OE. You do need to keep your balls lubricated.

Thanks for the replies folks

I've also checked in the obvious place

http://catalog.peachparts.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1981-Mercedes--Benz-300d-Body--Mechanical--Trim&yearid=1981%40%401981&makeid=63%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40X&modelid=6188%3AED|10000132%3AMBC|1503 %40%40300D&catid=241766%40%40Body+Mechanical+%26+Trim&subcatid=241812@@Door+Check+-+Front&mode=PD

Silly - I should have done that before.

Anyway the driver's side door retainers are most definitely the copies - $40(ish) compared with $100(ish)

The first 2 doors in your pic are clearly not original to your car.

Yep that seems to be the case. But I think they are original MB replacements. Someone spent a lot of money getting this car back together again. I think it was probably in an accident as the sill also has evidence of non factory fitment!

The sill and floor pan fix explains my wonky driver's seat =>

I was worried about chassis alignment last year so I checked and checked this several times =>

I have parted several w123s but I have never come across the style of door check you had in your right door. But all the cars I worked on were 1980 or later. Possibly that's an early production part?

Thanks for the input - mine is a 1981... from the link I posted to fastlane (above) you can see that these types are the original

Compared with my dirty one from the back door

Wow, that means every one I've pulled out had been replaced. Guess it makes sense given the age of these cars, I just never thought about it.

BTW, the first time I read the subject line for this thread I thought you were going to give tips on dating a CSI... I used to have this thing for Helgenberger (Willows) but I decided she's too into the baddies LOL.

Off topic indeed - that's no problem (I'm always off on a tangent) but shame on you for not posting a picture =>

Away, evil one!

Actually I had a bigger thing for Sofia Curtis, the Brit who played the LV CSI turned detective....

I think these are early versions. I only seen these on 1976-1977 vehicles.

Regarding your doors, If they are factory manufactured pre-81, the corrosion protection is not as good as the after '81 parts.

I bought a new door check strap from my MB dealer, and the one I got were the ones you pulled from the driver door

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...1&d=1306182493

What's the part number stamped on this one?
