oil separator

So I bought this 1985 300d cal. not running as a project car. The owner before me put in a different engine after blowing the turbo and running the car on no oil. The engine he put in is out of 1984 300d I think not really sure but I know its not a cal because they couldn’t sell them in cal. In 1984. When he put it in the crankcase vent was caped, super easy fix, and caused the engine to stall out. Well I have been driving the car back and forth to school how about 2 and half months fixing things as they wore out.

About a month ago I realized that the crankcase vent was dumping oil into the cal. Air filter housing. After some research I noticed that the fed air filters have oil separators and was wondering how I could hook up some kind of oil separator system for my engine. I’m pretty sure the engine is already set up for it I just can’t find any diagrams of the oil separator system to help me set one up. I don’t want to just collect the oil, but return it to the oil pan like the fed. Engines do. If anyone can help me that would be amazing!

As I understand what you are saying, you have an 85 300D Calif. model, and still have the Calif. air filter that is mounted behing the R/F headlight.

You now have an 84 engine from a Federal model.

The original set up for the 85`s, had the vent line out of the top of the Valve Cover, going into the top of the Cali air filter, but just before the filter is a rubber connector that pulls some of the blow by gasses straight into the intake hose just before the turbo. you can thank CARB, the calif air resourcers board for this invention.

Now you are saying the drain tube in the pan that would come from the Federal air filter that normaly sits on top of the engine is capped? You can either source a Fed air filter and the mount, drain tube and run the VC vent to the top of this filter.

Now if the guy that did the engine swap used the Calif intake and exhaust manifolds. then it won`t work, It all sits up too high. then you would need to source the Fed intake/exhaust manifolds, or jurry rig a oil seperator that would drain into the drain tube in the pan.

There are some pictures in the archives. i`ll see what I can find.

Welcome to the forum.

Found this picture showing a seperator mounted by the firewall, and the routing of the hoses.

The 82 -83 240D`s had this type of oil seperator. I have one Iam eventually going to add to my 85.

Found a picture of the Cali engine bay, is your set up this way?

You can see how the vent runs to the filter housing.

Finding a Federal air filter assembly, with engine mount, would be the simplest way.

True< but we really don`t know what is on the engine now. what did the engine installer use? this is a 85 Kali Kar, and did the guy use the Kali set up? or leave the federal manifolds on?

If you swap on the Federal manifolds, then the Kali Turbo needs to be clocked around to work. I did try that. but couldn`t get it to Clock around. so swapped in a Fed Turbo.

Scientific test if you get bored.

If you get bored, you can "Blow a bag of Blow By".

Engine blow-by test, Blow a bag of blow-by
