Steering shock

I'm halfway through replacing a tie rod and center link on my w123. It's the first time I've attempted front-end work on any car.

So far so good... though my back isn't thanking me for the workout.

Steering shock: I never thought about this when I ordered my parts.

How stiff should the shock be? It takes firm pressure to compress it right now. Seems good to me, but I don't know, do I?

Cheers

When I first got my Car and went through what was at lest 4 cycles of degreasing the under the Hood stuff I remove the steering Shock/stabilizer to clean it off better.

I found that without it the Car was slightly easier to steer when making slow tight turns like backing out of my Drive Way every Morning.

I took it for a rid on the Freeway and noticed no difference at all not having it installed.

So, I never put it back on and in fact; other than that it is in my Garage somewhere have no idea where it is.

I am not sure what specific Purpose Mercedes had in mind when they installed the Steering Stabilizer. I know from driving in German the Cobble Stone Roads that were still around at that time can rattle and bump you around; and, it might be helpful on the Autobahn when your Speed is Maxed out.

I have read of no way to test it except that if there is no resistance at all or a visable leak you know it is bad.

The shock should be pretty stiff. When I removed one from my W126 it was obviously shot as it compressed very easily. The new one took some effort to compress, but it wasn't overly difficult to do. It's a relatively inexpensive part also.

Ok thanks for the replies.

This info confirms what I figured, as this was a dealer-maintained car and I don't believe the owner quibbled about the bills. The shock isn't like new but it's pretty close. Not going to worry about it.
