99 E300D Blown Transmission
I'm disgusted. Trans is blown. Local shop will rebuild for $4500.
Does anyone know of a good tranny shop in my area so I can compare pricing? I live in Connecticut. NY, NJ, and Mass are close to me. Thanks, Mike 99 E300D 124K |

Are you sure it's bad? Can you give us a more detailed description of the problem?

When I was driving to work yesterday I came to a quick stop and it felt like I got hit by another car. A very loud clunking sound, and the car shook.
When the light turned green the car would not move unless I pressed down on the accelerator to around 2000 RPM. Then the car lunged forward and the clunking sounded again. It almost felt like I had a flat tire. I pulled over to look under the car and everything looked fine. Drove away slowly and it seemed ok. But now I can hear slight grinding. Same thing happened at the next light so I decided to go straight to the shop which was only about a mile away. If I stopped slowly and gently it was ok, but as soon as I hit the brake normally it would lock up with the violent clunking noise. It sounded like the problem was in the rear end. The shop told me the rear end is fine but transmission needs to be rebuilt. They have not taken it apart yet, but judging by the sound I know what to expect. |

You might want to try Jersey Shore Transmission. Their web site is Jerseyshoretransmission.com. They have a good reputation, and if they can't do the job, they may be able to refer you to someone who can. Good luck

From a old school trans shop I dealt with...
Who seemed to really know his sh-t. I was told that rebuilding one of these tranny's is a waste. When they do go, most all the internals get trashed. Better off buying a replacement unit from a dismantler. Even if you want that non-blown up unit rebuilt, that would be cheaper than rebuilding your blown up one. That is what I was led to believe. Take note I bought an engine from him out of a 2000 c230 Kompressor for $400. as well as a few other parts. He bought the car as a wreck with 50kmi. only for the transmission to use for a customer.
I aslo found out that the torque converters in these 5 speeds have wearable clutches. I thought my 1999 C230 transmission was going south, ended up to be just the converter. I also had a 99E300 with approx 200kmi. trans was replaced when purchased. If you decide to check with the dismantlers, ask them to give you a list of possible other vehicles which use the same unit. Might make the hunt easier. |
