5970 were made in 78.
I just bought a 80 300 SD for $300 and a 6.9 for $600.
Got the SD running in a day or so. I can only drive it around the house, but it still feels solid after 275000 miles and 10 years of sitting outside.

I let my 79 300SD go and wish I had it back. Small pic still in my signature.
I had a gem. 9 of 10 exterior & 9.5 of 10 inside.

Problems I had were a small leak in the A pillar on highway speeds in Florida monsoon rains. AC eventually gave me problems which I have no patience for, and yes I was spoiled by my '83 which had the 6 way power driver's seat.

Still wish I kept it. Someone here told me when I got mine that driving a 79 SD on the highway was like "dancin' with a fat lady". If you own one you know how true that is.

You haven't driven where I drive!!!!!

Yes, I know the Italians are classic cases, but there are U.S. drivers that defy logic and reason!

California? I agree there are bad drivers everywhere, but in the US, we can at least assume that the majority of the drivers pay some attention to traffic laws. Here the guy roaring down the center median at twice the limit blowing their horn and screaming obscenities is the exception, not the rule.

I haz driven in

Mumbai, India
Karachi, Pakistan (in fact a lot of Pakistan)
Bangkok, Thailand
London, UK
Nice - etc etc. France - went through it to drive to Italy - hate french parking assist system, your car is their tool for parking. bump, dent, scratch etc.
Houston, USA - boring, maniac trucks everywhere and people assuming that their little cubes of privacy would repel laws of physics, recently I saw a suburban cut me off on the highway, slide out of control, hit the HOV divider and topple sideways - YUP, youse donts treats a truck like a Lotus Elise.
Chicago, USA (you boys better explain the ban on U turns there)

US traffic is a breath of fresh air compared to India and Pakistan. - traffic there is umm lets say - INCREDIBLy insane.

driven there plenty of times, though more the FT Lauderdale area. same as CA where I have relatives. Traffic and idiot drivers are in both areas, sure. However, we will have to agree to disagree, I will maintain that US drivers are more law abiding than most of the world.

Does that mean there aren't idiots? no.
