To be quite honest, the ACC took more W116's off the road than anything else. I have 1,307,000 miles on my W116....

I just bought a 80 300 SD for $300 and a 6.9 for $600. Got the SD running in a day or so. I can only drive it around the house, but it still feels solid after 275000 miles and 10 years of sitting outside.

I let my 79 300SD go and wish I had it back. Small pic still in my signature.
I had a gem. 9 of 10 exterior & 9.5 of 10 inside. Problems I had were a small leak in the A pillar on highway speeds in Florida monsoon rains. AC eventually gave me problems which I have no patience for, and yes I was spoiled by my '83 which had the 6 way power driver's seat. Still wish I kept it. Someone here told me when I got mine that driving a 79 SD on the highway was like "dancin' with a fat lady". If you own one you know how true that is. ..

Also, you have to understand that there were probably many more W123s, W126s, and W201s built than W116s.

my feeling on the 116 is that they blundered on the US spec quad headlights look in this country. With the euro headlights, euro bumpers, the SD is a beautiful car, with the 4 headlights, large bumpers, its an awkward looking car.
What works on the 123 with the same types of components does not on the larger SD, which comes off as ungainly and may explain why when given the choice between the two in a showroom, people probably went with the slightly smaller 123 where the look succeeds. I think the euro headlights look better on both the 123 and 116, but on the 116, its a world of difference for the whole car. There would be a lot more of them had the euro look had been from the showroom back in the 80s

the lift points are different in those two pics. 201 is from the jack holes, 116 is on blocks underneath. I have no doubt the same thing could be done though personally, but these are not comparison photos

The U.S. spec bumpers are absolutely necessary to share the road with U.S. spec drivers.

naaa, I used to believe this until I had cause to drive in Italy. Now I see the good in US drivers general respect for traffic laws. There are bad drivers everywhere, but we have fewer of them than most parts of the world.

You haven't driven where I drive!!!!!
Yes, I know the Italians are classic cases, but there are U.S. drivers that defy logic and reason!

California? I agree there are bad drivers everywhere, but in the US, we can at least assume that the majority of the drivers pay some attention to traffic laws. Here the guy roaring down the center median at twice the limit blowing their horn and screaming obscenities is the exception, not the rule.
