If you would like to send me your injectors, I will test them for you. No charge. Sounds like you might have a "streamer" or two.

Back in January, I took my SD to Eureka from Los Angeles, with a 3.07 rear end, new gears in my odometer, Goodyear Assurance Fuelmax tires and a light foot; my first fuel stop netted 29.2 mpg. My second one got a 29.6, granted my primary fuel filter leaks a little but it was mostly flat driving up the I-5. I'm fairly certain hyper milers can get over 30 mpg. I also plan to swap my rear end with a 2.47 unit, just trying to source half shafts.

Aside from that trip, my economy is a more sensible 23-26 mpg per tank.

tangofox, do you rebuild injectors also or just test them? I'm interested in getting a set rebuilt for my car.

Yes, 23-26 sounds doable to me. It fits with what everyone has said about the SD over the last thirty years.

FWIW , in the Mercedes technical data document 00-040, for modesl 123.133, 123.153 123.193 fuel econony was listed as:

city 27
hwy 33
combined 29

Maybe our cars are just worn out along with the MPG drop?

Interesting... Do you have any data about 126 models?

I'll stand by my claim that 35mpg is impossible. You seem to verify that. On the other hand, your interpretation of '22-25mpg is standard' is incorrect. My statement does not preclude the possibility that a person could get higher than 25mpg drafting a semi across Kansas. Under most driving conditions the 617 will get mileage in the range I stated. Read thru the multiple posts on this topic over the last ten years in this forum and you'll see most people reporting mileage in that range. Hence it is 'standard'.

Under ideal conditions I can get 35MPG with my manual 240Ds, a 617 SD will never see that

I truly think 35mpg is achievable, but only with STRICT driving habits.
you'd have to tune the IP for mileage which would result in a REALLY weak driver. you'd need Thin SMOOTH tires, and brakes adjusted for ZERO drag. the turbo would need the wastegate set back to like 4 or 5 psi, and the car would need to be on the freeway the entire duration of the test, on level ground. with NOTHING in the cargo area but a thin driver.

To you, perhaps.

What is not helpful, in my opinion, is trying to pass off some occasional fluke (like driving downhill with a tailwind while drafting a semi truck) as a normal, everyday occurance.
An occasional fluke? I hit 30 regularly, but you seem to have a problem understanding that. Open up a little bit and realize not everyone gets crappy mileage and doesn't share the same car and driving habits. My point is, as someone who has been accused of lying about his mileage, it isn't helpful to display attitude and make snide remarks. OP was talking about a mileage drop, which, regardless of his calculations (as they would remain constant) would be true and indicative of a problem unless his odometer is off, which is why I again recommend checking it against GPS before any drastic repair. Basic troubleshooting doesn't need an attitude.

It doesn't say what kind of gallons but since it's a turbo model which is for the US market one can assume it is US gallons.

22-25mpg isn't crappy mileage. The 617 in the vans (209d-409d) gets around 16mpg.

No I don't. But if the 126 has better hwy cruising gearing, I'd think it would be even better than the 123 figures.

27mpg is what I got after religiously calculating aproximately 72 thousand miles of mostly highway driving. the SD is contemplating a transfer to a family member. He's got her now and checking her out.
