How about shift rod length? Are they different between 350 and 300?

Still dealing with 300 to 300 swap. I havent gotten to the 350 swap yet. That will probably be next week. I had an offer on this car, so I had to repower it. Someone told me it probably bent the flat barish piece of linkage under the shifter. I need to see if I can get to it from the bottom rather than go down through the top.

OK, I've confirmed at least to the first front glow plug that I do in fact have glow. However, I do not have any current in the black wire going to the indicator. I had an indicator light a few days ago just fine. But since the install, I've lost the indicator light. Any ideas?

What's the resistance of each glow plug at the relay connector?

All ohmed out around 1.1 except cylinders 3 and 6. I'll see if I can get them replaced. I didn't realize bad plugs would affect the indicator light. Whenever I have a plug go in a W123, the light still works, but blinks after the cycle. I'll check to see if replacing the plugs does the trick. Thanks very much for the suggestion. I do notice that the delivery valve seals are shot. Fuel pools at the pump in at least 2 places. Any ideas what size viton o rings I need to buy? Also, it is VERY hard to start and restart. I'm hoping it's because the fuel is leaking back down, and once I replace the o rings, that will help.
OK, enough for this 300SDL repower, it's being sold once I get the fuel leak fixed. On another note, I hope to start the install of the 300SDL engine into the 350SDL. I am told that the accelerator linkage pivot setup is different between the 2 models, and it does appear different. So, I'm going to pull one from a parts car I have to be safe. Oh, and I checked the IP harness. I verified on the 300SDL, it's 3 wires to 2 pins. On the 350SDL, it's 2 wires to 2 pins. So, I need to figure out the extra wire on the 300SDL. I'm using the harness on the 350SDL, so I'm just hoping that plugging the 2 wire harness on the IP will work. I'm also swapping compressor brackets to keep the 17C compressor and keep the system sealed. It looks about as straight forward as all the other OM603 3.0L swaps, but I'm sure there will be a few differences. I plan on keeping the higher amperage 350SDL alternator also. If anyone has done this, and anything hasn't been discussed, feel free to chime in. And thanks to Sixto. Alot of help there Sir.

Well, here is the engine that's coming out of the car to be replaced with a very low mileage 300SDL engine. After talking with Sixto, I'm considering parting it out rather than selling it whole. My wife and I ship quite a few items daily, but I would sweat the risk a bit shipping something this heavy, especially with the risk of damage in shipping. Not to mention, my wife couldn't ship this herself, hehe. I hate to pull it apart, but I guess if it can help a number of 350SDL's stay on the road, that would serve a greater purpose. I'm back to work next week. I just signed a 3 month contract with a large corporation for my services, and I will be putting ALOT of miles on this car back and forth to Atlanta, with no time to work on anything of any serious effort. So, in the event the rod bending starts, or anything else related to the 180,000 miles that's on the car, I would feel awful that I didn't use the opportunity of being out of work to re-power this car with a much fresher engine with a better reputation. Overall, I feel this would be the best forward looking decision, even if I sell the car later on after the contract is up.

The way .97 rods typically bend doesn't happen overnight or from one moment to the next. If oil consumption and exhaust smoke are in check, you're a long way form the rods bending to the point that the car is undriveable. Strange as it seems, the common form of rod bending is not necessarily a catastrophic failure. You either get tired of adding more oil than fuel and/or the plume is more than you or the law will bear. It will still get you to work and back.

Hehe, the law portion of the scenario never occured to me. Hard to imagine smoking bad enough to be pulled over. Ha

You never drove behind my 93 SD. I got a couple of letters from that from that 1-800-smoke reporting service. I must say Lucas oil additive did cut down the smoke and oil consumption temporarily. It hardly restored the engine.

I dont notice a huge difference off the line, of course, I never really push it either. Most people say their Grandmother would pass me on a double line just to get past me. Hehe, (developed alot of patience driving a powerhouse 240D Automatic for over a decade with AC blowing on high) But I do notice a difference in passing speeds on a 2 lane road. The 350SDL is markedly quicker there I can tell. But I'd imagine off the line would be quicker too.

That reminds me of a JC Whitney product I saw years ago. They were some sort of pellets you added to the crankcase. I would imagine they had a high graphite content. But the tagline was "Rebuild your engine as you drive". Those poor pellets must have worked night and day to repair a cracked ring.

You can tell a 350 with bent rods from the rear because the driver's side tail light will be black

OK, I'm somewhat finished with the 300SDL swap that got in the way of the main goal. Back to working on the 350SDL swap. It's heart and lungs were removed yesterday. I'm going to remove the throttle pivot from a parts 300SDL I have and see if there is anything else I need. Hopefully, I'll have everything wrapped up this week. Ordered new front and rear seals for the engine and trans, should be in tomorrow. Thanks again for all the advice with this. So far, it's fairly straight forward with a few differences. I'll try to keep everyone current on the differences I run into in case you attempt something like this in the future.

Since you have 87 and 90 SDLs side-by-side, can you compare the downpipes? I expect the 87 to have an oxidation catalyst that the 90 doesn't. If so, are the downpipes otherwise interchangeable? Is the 350SDL thus a source of catless downpipes for earlier SDLs?
Thanks, Sixto 87 300D |
