is it the right kind of R-4 compressor for Mercedes? the regular R-4's (for GM, etc) are mounted differently (upside down/ rightside up, whatever you wanna call it). so if someone installs a regular R4 compressor in a Merc it will lock up in short order since the sump is in the wrong place. i've seen several places that sell R4's saying its for a Merc when its actually not

this does not apply to new compressorworks compressors.

And that jives with the Email I got back from Compressorworks. ;)

Vstech, I did spill a good bit of oil out when installing the compressor, could I charge in a couple ounces or Ester oil to see if the clanking will stop? I did see another user had a noisy compressor and adding oil cured it but I know its coming from within and the way I see it, it can't hurt.

Follow Up

I just got back from the shop after injecting 4oz of mineral oil into my A/C system and the clanking has ceased... for now:rolleyes:. I know it's too early to tell what kind of damage I caused to the compressor while running it with only about 1 ounce of oil in there and all that clankity clankin going on in there but we'll see. I did about 50 miles with it like that over the course of 2 days. I noticed too that the belt was "bouncing" but not really slipping, so I tightened that up too.

For now, my opinion on the quality of CompressorWorks Compressors is that they hold up well but that comes from a "I treated it like *****, running it on low oil while it growled and bucked yet gave me cold air, and hey, I probably just got a dud, but it really is low on oil but I'm gonna run it anyway since I just spent so much time and money on this project, yet I add oil to it and it quiets down and still pumps my R12 to make all the cool air I need" standpoint.
