So I just put in the start that is half rebuilt. It's amazing the difference. It's about twice as quiet, and the engine turns over about 1 1/2 times faster now. I'm glad it decided to break now than explode and be out $250. Thanks for all the help too. The pics and info helped immensely.

For the sake of comparison, the original starter in my '96 E300D (W210, OM606NA) failed at 262,000 miles due to a mechanical linkage problem in the solenoid. I replaced the entire starter with a rebuilt Bosch unit from an on-line vendor. The net cost to me was $200 including shipping the bad one back to the supplier. The rebuilt starter came with a 2-year warranty (it expires next month, hmmm).

If I knew anything about starters I probably could have fixed mine for a lot less but this is the car my wife drives and I needed to get it fixed quickly and reliably. I figured that my contribution was the R&R.

This job is really worth trying. Undoing the solenoid was easy with the help of an impact drive and a few sharp taps.

One can't use an impact wrench on the rear cap of the starter. One of the two screws holding the grease cap/brush assembly was too seized and I had to pinch it in a vise grip and break off the head, but that did not pose a problem for disassembly.

I now have a revived turbo starter which I'll fit to my non-turbo, while I rebuild that one.

I put stay-lube synthetic grease on the bendix and the yoke
