Mercedes did not put a turbocharger in the 123 body (300D) until 1982. It may have been a 116 (300SD), wich had a turbocharger from 1978 until 1980 when the 116 chassis was discontinued. These cars have similar features, as the 116 is basically a bigger version of the 123.

Someone may have installed an aftermarket turbo way back then, but the engine itself would have been a non turbo in the 123's back then. If I recall, 1981 put the turbo in the 300TD, and 1982 was the first 300D turbodiesel.

The "Turbodiesel" badge was something of propaganda. The Diesel Mercedes in America had had this stigma of being slow and sluggish, in fact, if you say "Diesel" on the back of a car, you were to be more forgiving around it... For it couldn't keep with traffic. The Turbodiesel was to abmonish all negative thoughts, and boast of the new power and technology involved. The Germans have always been one for this propaganda, on the BMW 2002 Turbo of 1973 and 74, they were cocky enought to write "obrut" on the front spoiler, so when view through a rear-view mirror, it wouild read "turbo." Clever....
