Feels like I made some progress, and its running better, and quieter.

Now, I did find an issue...
Seems that the EGR flap vacuum unit on top of the air filter box is dead.
when I apply vacuum to it, its not moving and will not hold vac, so assume the membrane is toast.
I tried to find info on what this will do to drivability and economy, but as this was a California only spec, there is little info out there.
Can anyone tell me if its worth replacing?
Looks like its a dealer only part too... $$$$$!
This the part sitting on top of the intake box between #2 and #3 runner..

Back to how the motor sounds...

I took this video with the airfilter off.
The first few seconds I moved the EGR flap manually, just to show what happens...
Then can someone tell me if the intake noise sounds normal?
The is a "Dunk-Dunk-Dunk" noise which i have never heard before and sounds odd to my ears.. If it was on a gas motor, I would suspect a burned intake valve...
Click image below to see it.

I can't pull your video up from my iPhone but when I get home I'll check it out. My 603 has a tick as well that's annoying me.

Thanks,
Oh, also, I did spend time listening to the motor in general...
The ticking that I was concerned about is not easy to trace, but one thing I did find was this...
Using a mechanical stethascope, #4 injector sounds different to all the rest...
It has a metalic "Ting" that the others dont..
From my records, #4 injector was replaced, so maybe its the correct noise and all the rest are bad!

Pull the injector and have it checked? They may have used a marginal one when they replaced it?

I would disable/delete everything involved with the EGR. No need to replace anything EGR related. Cap/plug any vacuum lines, and make a block off plate that is sandwiched between the EGR and manifold.

Ok, cool.
No smog on this car to worry about... for now!

Capping the EGR on the exhaust is not a problem, but what differnce will it make to drivability or economy?

At a minimum, it will help keep the intake cleaner. It may even run a little better.

I'm familiar with the benefits of blocking off the EGR system on a turbo 617. Do the n/a motors enjoy a similar benefit? When I took the intake manifold off my 617 it was lined with thick gummy deposits. I've not notice similiar deposits on the intake on the 190D.

Anyone think the engine sounds odd, or is it me?
