84 SD New style trailer hitch

Wanting a truly hidden hitch I designed one that would fit behind the bumper and not interfere with the shock absorbing aspect. Because the rear bumper is so easy to remove on the 84 SD I cut out holes in the mounting plates for the shock tubes as opposed to a U shape cut out. A more rigid plate is attained this way. The plates are 1/4" but could be 1/8" .
The torque tube is 2" x 2" x 1/8" welded tube.

While the bumper is off hose out the mud and do some maintenance. Some time with a wire brush followed by a good coating of gutter sealer of undercoat will extend the life of the bumper and mounts.
The plate from the receiver to the most rigid part of the spare tire well could have been avoided if a thicker plate from the tube down to the receiver had been used.
The original 6 bolts into the body were used with a heavy washer replacing the 5mm factory washers.
The bumper can come off in ten minutes.

Nicely done. Have you done any calculations in how much load it will take?

Re load

I haul an 8' trailer with a small Yanmar yard tractor that has a bucket on the front and small hoe on the rear. I guess the Yanmar is around a ton. I balance the load so the tongue weight is probably 300 - 350 lbs.
