1985 300 SD transmission leak on hard line

Did a valve adjustment today, and when finished, noticed some trans fluid on pass side. Seems to be leaking out of the hard line that is clamped to the engine . It appears to be leaking under one of the clamps. I removed the socket cap screws and the banjo bolt at the trans end, also removed the connection into radiator....

What's the trick to removing the hard line intact? It's a twisted snake, kept trying to remove it by sending it forward but I get only about half way with it and the banjo bolt area ends up pressing hard against the starter.

Sending it back towards the back end is not proving to be any better, probably worse way...

Do I have to remove more parts to get the hard line out? Hoping not.

Also, what's the best way to patch that line. I will wrap electricians tape under the clamps when reinstalling....

There should be a rubber pad between the line and the clamp. When the pad disintegrates, the line rubs against the clamp. Phil can tell you if the MB sells the pads, or use any old piece of rubber. Electrical tape won't last.

Hey, Thanks for that info on the pads. Actually saw a part of one fall to the ground while I was taking clamps off...

The big problem is getting the hard line out from under the car. I want to bring it to a shop that can tig weld the hole...

I can't get it out without bending it and did not want to do that unless I HAVE to.

So, has anyone worked on this type of repair and what's the best way to get that hard line out?

I have replaced the starter on this car and greatly appreciated the tips on which way the front wheels should be turned and other little tricks to get that chunk of metal out of it's jigsaw puzzle spot!

Was hoping to hear some similar descriptions on removing the rigid line...

Going to cut some grass now instead of messing up the line.

Simplest fix is to cut the hard line and splice it with a piece of rubber hose. No need to remove the hard line.

Good idea! This is a low pressure line isn't it? So I suppose your idea will be fine.
Will wait til tomorrow, if anyone else has a suggestion.

If the rubber hose idea is a good one, I guess I can cut both connecting ends off and bend a new pipe, rather than trying to tig weld the hole.

Or run a long piece of hose...

Note: the hole is in the area where a clamp held the pipe to the engine!

That line typically leaks right there once the rubber protection on the line gets out of place or wears out. Just use a small plumbing pipe cutter and put a short piece of hose connecting the two sections.

Cut the pipe at the hole put in hose that is ATF compatable clamp and move the tubing clamp to another position or use some more of the rubber hose split down the middle. Put the split rubber hose on the metal pipe to keep it from vibrating any further and hold it in place with some well placed plastic wire tyes. Get out the bubble Gum and bailing wire and GitRdone.

here are some photo's of the pipe, cut and cleaned up.

Also, wanted to check, is this fuel hose appropriate for trans fluid? I am hoping so... If not, what should I purchase?

Did you finish the repair, did you end up replacing the line or just keeping the patch?
