That says, "fluid for the hydraulic (automatic) transmissions, for the boxes of mechanical speeds" next to the manual transmission.

My french isn't stellar, but nor is the Germans.

The translations are sort of funny done literally. "boxes of automatic speeds" and whatnot.

I have automatic transmission in my 4speed 123s and 5speed 124s. No issues. I use redline ATF in a few of them, and just standard ATF dex/merc in others.

Thank you for your replies. Do either of you have a US owners manual that says to use 10 W-20 engine oil in a manual transmission? I guess that is what surprised me the most since I have not seen it mentioned in any of the other threads for use as a transmission fluid...

FWIW-people have run Mobil 1 5w30 successfully on their 717.400. They do it mainly to quite down some gear chatter. You can probably get away using widely available 5w20 also.

My owner's manual lists automatic transmission fluid type A suffix A. Of course it doesn't list a specific name brand. In looking at my Haynes Manual it, also, lists ATF Fluid Type A.

I use this in all my VW 5 speeds as well - works great, and the price is low.

Just use MTF regardless of what the manuals say, the general feeling is that they didn't have the technology to produce MTF when these cars were produced, so they stated to use oil or ATF. The problem is that the newer oil and ATF contain so many additives that are not recommended for use as MTF or to be ran in the fuel tank.

I have had both 4-spd 240d and 5-spd 300d, and ran this fluid question by the local Mercedes dealer. They told me they'd call back, and several hours later the nice service manager told me to go to a Chevy dealer and ask for transmission fluid for the (6-spd) transmission in some year (don't remember year) Corvette. When she said that, I remembered reading that this transmission was a Getrag. So I went to the local Chevy dealer, and they had it for me overnight, although the guys at the parts counter were curious what I was going to do with it. It worked fine, in Maine winter/summer, and even in Minnesota winter. For what it's worth.
