84 190d Oil Pan Gasket Replacement ,do I need to lift the engine?
The 1984 190D 2.2 Oil Pan Gasket is going out and looks like Im in for a little gasket replacing ,the oil puddle underneath the car after driving a few miles resembles the great lakes and has postponed the driving of the car for the moment .Im in the process of starting the repair ,any advice?Someones been into the pan before due to the mix match of pan bolts , not being all hex bolts.I tried to tighten what I felt was loose bolts with no luck.Any other gaskets under the engine that might leak oil?I looked at the oil filter area and everything in this area looks A ok.

I LookED online for a good image of the 2.2 motor and it looks to HAVE a oil level sender on the side thats leaking ,hope this is the fix ,hate to have to replace a gasket thats otherwise good .

as the old adage goes...
clean the area thoroughly, then take a few trips and get back under there. My '84 did not have an oil level sender, but it would be on the driver's side of the pan towards the front... definitely a good place for a leak. I would strongly suggest pulling the engine to do this seal. There's too much involved and cleaning the surfaces.... fuggedaboutit This may sound crazy, but it might be worth a shot to loosen all the bolts just a turn , then tighten them all systematically for a better seal. If someone has messed with the pan before, perhaps they were just a goof. |

I might be a lucky guy after all ,in further inspection it turns out that the vacuum pump is seeping oil out along the lower seal ,Ill have to take off the tensioner pulley but this looks so much easier than a pan gasket.
